Royals' Yordano Ventura, 25, killed in auto crash in Dominican Republic

Former Diamondback Andy Marte dies in car crash

According to multiple reports, a pair of auto crashes in the Dominican Republic early Sunday morning took the lives for Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura and former Red Sox prospect Andy Marte.

"Our prayers right now are with Yordano's family as we mourn this young man's passing", Moore said in the team's statement.

Marte, 33, died in a separate traffic accident in the Dominican Republic, where he was playing winter league baseball.

Marte had been a seven-year veteran of the big leagues with the Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians, and Arizona Diamondbacks as an infielder before moving to Korea to continue his career the past two years.

Marte's representative agency, JMG Baseball, confirmed his passing with a tweet. The following year Ventura won 13 games for the World Champion Royals and again appeared in the playoffs and World Series.

Royals players, managers and fans reacted to Ventura's death with shock and sadness.

Two other active Dominican baseball players have died on the country's unsafe highways in recent years.

Marte signed with the Pirates as a free agent in 2011 and had a.202 average in 92 games for Class AAA Indianapolis.

About to enter his fourth full season with the Royals, Ventura was 38-31 with a 3.89 ERA since being called up late in the 2013 season. He was known to confound batters with his stuff which allowed him to earn a postseason ERA of 4.66 across two seasons of postseason play with KC.
