"The first threat, an external one, is related to the new geopolitical situation in the world and around Europe", the letter said.

According to Tusk, the new U.S. administration seems to have "put into question the last 70 years of American foreign policy".

Trump's likely choice as the US's envoy to the EU, Ted Malloch, warned this week that euro "could collapse" in the next 18 months.

His remarks were among the strongest directed at the new USA president since Trump took office on January 20 and reflect a growing sense in many European capitals of a need to respond to his policy moves, notably the ban on the entry of refugees and others from seven Muslim-majority countries.

The former Polish prime minister said in the wake of the Brexit vote the European Union faced "three threats" that made the 28-nation bloc's situation "more unsafe than ever before".

His opinions reflect the growing feeling in several European capitals that there has to be a reaction against Trump's policies, especially the ban on the admission of refugees and citizens from seven mostly-Muslim states. The apparent contradiction left European Union allies scratching their heads the following day, with German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier saying Mr. Trump's views on the alliance had "caused astonishment".

Agriculture Department lifts USDA gag order after public outcry
The ARS now has about 750 pending projects dealing with issues like food safety, crop protection, aquaculture and climate change. Sonny Perdue of Georgia, is also a critic of science-based climate change research.

Tusk's letter, which was sent to 27 EU member states ahead of a summit in Malta this Friday, goes on to also list internal threats from what the president of the European council describes as a rise in "anti-EU, nationalist, increasingly xenophobic sentiment" as well as a third set of threats posed by the "state of mind of the pro-European elites" and their "decline of faith in political integration, submission to populist arguments as well as doubt in the fundamental values of liberal democracy".

Meanwhile, in an interview with the Financial Times, published today, Trump's top trade adviser Peter Navarro called the euro a "grossly undervalued" currency, adding it was being used by Germany to "exploit" the USA and give the country an unfair edge over its trading partners.

Trump has questioned the NATO alliance linking North America and Europe, and hopes for a major trans-Atlantic trade deal have already taken a deep dive amid worries of USA protectionism. Therefore, let us have the courage to be proud of our own achievements, which have made our continent the best place on Earth.

The letter continued: "We should remind our American friends of their own motto: United we stand, divided we fall".

Tusk added that "only together can European Union countries be fully independent".
