Acting Army Secretary Clears the Way for Dakota Access Pipeline

Sioux Indians Secure Legal Victory in Effort to Thwart Construction of Pipeline

Rep. Kevin Cramer, R-N.D., said in a statement that the pipeline is an "important piece of energy infrastructure enhancing America's energy security and putting North Dakotans and Americans back to work". National environmental groups joined the fray soon after, bringing the issue to global attention.

The Standing Rock Sioux, whose opposition to the project attracted the support of thousands of protesters from around the country to North Dakota, immediately vowed to return to court to stop it.

A protest camp opposing the Dakota Access Pipeline sits under a supermoon.

Mr. Hoeven said he issued his Tuesday press release after speaking with Vice President Mike Pence and Acting Secretary of the Army Robert Speer.

It appears that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is gearing up to approve and easement that will allow the last stretch of the controversial 1,172-mile-long Dakota Access Pipeline.

"I'm not going to take anyone's property or do anything like that", Hans Youngbird Bradley, a construction contractor from the Standing Rock Sioux tribe said during the meeting.

"If and when the easement is granted, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe will vigorously pursue legal action", the statement read.

NASA Remembers Fallen Heroes: 50th Anniv of Apollo 1 Tragedy
NASA is opening an exhibit honoring the astronauts in the Apollo 1 fire - 50 years to the day they died. The tribute is located near the abandoned Launch Complex 34, where the fire occurred.

"It is paramount for public safety, and to prevent an environmental disaster, that the camps be cleared prior to a potential spring flood", GOP North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, a pipeline supporter, said in a statement issued Monday.

In January, President Donald Trump issued an executive order speeding up the approval processes for both the Dakota Access and Keystone XL pipelines.

In a statement released on Tuesday night, the tribe said it would "vigorously pursue legal action to ensure the environmental impact statement order issued late previous year is followed so the pipeline process is legal, fair and accurate". "The Army will make any decisions once a full review and analysis is completed in accordance with the Presidential Memorandum".

"We can't give up". "The resistance is still alive".

"We know construction will move forward - though we are waiting on more information in regards to a timeline for when construction can begin", she said in a statement.

But she added: "People are strong". Instead of following proper legal procedure and completing the Environmental Impact Study, the Army has chosen to escalate an already tense situation, go against their own processes, and potentially put people in harm's way.
