Denis Villeneuve will direct the Dune remake

Brian Herbert, the son of Dune author Frank Herbert, broke the news on Twitter that Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners, Arrival) will direct the remake of the sci-fi epic. What happens next is an exploration of corrupt politics, environmentalism and gender dynamics.

This will reportedly be the first in a series of Dune films.

Unless it's seriously altered and trimmed down, there's simply too much going on for one film. While it has its fans, the movie in its various cuts has been looked down upon by fans and film critics alike for a disjointed narrative and lack of adherence to the source material.

With Blade Runner 2049 still in the hopper, there's no release schedule on Dune quite yet.

Hamon wins Left primary, cruises to France's presidential race: early results
Valls sharply criticized the idea as unrealistic and ruinous, both for France and the Socialist Party's credibility. Financial prosecutors are investigating.

An earlier film adaptation by director David Lynch and starring Kyle MacLachlan in 1984 was poorly received at the time but, in the years since, has gained somewhat of a cult status. Syfy also adapted the story into a miniseries in 2000, followed by a Children of Dune miniseries in 2003, both of which did gangbusters in the ratings.

The disaster was the inspiration of a 2013 documentary titled Jodorowsky's Dune.

Instead, bosses have opted for Villeneuve who has enjoyed Hollywood success following his debut film Incendies was released in 2010.

The Canadian helmer Villeneuve had previously told Variety back in September that, "A longstanding dream of mine is to adapt 'Dune, ' but it's a long process to get the rights, and I don't think I will succeed".
