Peter Thiel citizenship file released

The Internal Affairs summary said Mr Theil considered his "exceptional circumstances relate to his skill as an entrepreneur and his philanthropy".

Following public pressure, New Zealand's government on Wednesday released 145 pages of documents revealing details of the deal. While some Americans had voiced an interest in escaping to New Zealand, at the bottom of the Pacific and with six times as many sheep as people, if Donald Trump became president, Thiel doesn't fit into that category.

"It's not clear what value New Zealand is getting from granting Mr Thiel citizenship over residency", he said.

They show that Thiel, who was born in Germany, was granted citizenship despite not residing in the country for the prescribed 1,350 days, or having any intention to live in New Zealand on a permanent basis in the future.

He also met with prominent business leaders, including Sam Morgan and Rod Drury.

In his application letter to the department, Thiel wrote that New Zealand lacked the "deep pools of capital" to build out its technology industry.

IOM urges United States to receive refugees after Trump's decision
For Mustafa and his family, who are Syrian refugees in Jordan, a better life in the United States seemed within reach. An indefinite ban was also placed on the federal Syrian refugee program, according to a report by The Daily Beast .

Mr Lees-Galloway is also criticising the timing of the release of the documents about how Mr Thiel was granted citizenship. First, it pulls back the curtain on the way that citizenship can often be bought by foreign nationals with cash to spend, a fact that has left many New Zealanders outraged. The New Zealand Herald unearthed this information after the PayPal founder, whose fortune is valued at $2.6 billion, purchased an estate estimated at $10 million in 2015, the latest of several properties and investments in the island nation, including $3 million in the accounting firm Zero and $4 million in Pacfic Fibre.

A secret deal to grant New Zealand citizenship to technology billionaire and Donald Trump supporter Peter Thiel has caused a political scandal as it emerged he failed to meet the usual requirements but donated $NZ1 million to the relief effort after the devastating 2011 quake in Christchurch.

However, Thiel's citizenship status only became publicly known following last month's newspaper report.

The grant was given despite Thiel not fulfilling the usual criteria because he satisfied "exceptional circumstances" that meant the grant was in the public interest.

Labour Party immigration spokesperson Iain Lees-Galloway said it was evident Mr Thiel's wealth was a key factor but lack of time he had spent in the country raised huge questions.
