Apple is set to start making iPhones in India, minister says

An official delegation from Apple met the state minister IT minister Priyank Kharge here and expressed its intention to make its products in the state

Kharge added that the government will help Apple if it will look to form partnerships with other contract manufacturers in Bangalore in addition to Wistron.

Setting up a new plant in India would also be at odds with President Trump's call for American companies to create manufacturing jobs at home.

To show for all its efforts, Apple now has the regulatory green-light to set up direct stores, after the government tweaked foreign direct investment rules in June 2016.

Yes, Apple is going to start "manufacturing" iPhones in India this spring. "Apple's intentions to manufacture in Bengaluru is expected to foster cutting edge technology ecosystem and supply chain development in the State, which are critical for India to compete globally", he said.

However, although Apple said this week it is keen to "invest significantly" in India, it has not confirmed any plans.

Karnataka, which got 13th place in the ease-of-doing-business survey previous year, is leaving no stone unturned to make the Apple project a reality both for its snob value, and to silence criticism that Bengaluru is crumbling due to its traffic and infrastructure issues. This is due in part to the country's strict requirements for retailers and companies.

Conservatives Reps. Warn Against Shrinking The Scope Of O'Care Repeal
He described repeal efforts as "rank speculation", saying nobody knows what will happen in Congress. The protections also include pre-existing conditions as a reason to deny coverage.

Local manufacturing is expected to help Apple price its phones more competitively in India as it now attracts 12.5 per cent additional duty on imports.

Apple is to start making iPhones in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, the state's government has said. It will bring down the price of iPhones in India.

The Cupertino-based company reportedly gave the Indian government a list of demands prior to the announcement, including a 15-year tax holiday on imports.

"Apple Inc., will not come on board immediately until it completes the ongoing negotiations with the government of India", said a top government official. Last December, The Wall Street Journal reported that the company was in talks with Indian government officials to explore the possibility of manufacturing products locally.

However, Apple has been trying to convince the Central government for some concessions. This could allow Apple to open its own exclusive stores in India; now Apple-branded stores in India are run in partnership with other retailers.
