State Senate Will Consider Ridesharing Bill Monday

Katie Baranyuk gets out of a car driven by Dara Jenkins a driver for the ride-sharing service Lyft after getting a ride to downtown Seattle

The bill will be sent to the Assembly.

The draft ordinance requires Uber drivers to have insurance and undergo background checks.

"Thousands and thousands of residents, all across Upstate New York, have been demanding the expansion of transportation network companies beyond New York City".

The measure also calls for the adoption of zero tolerance alcohol and drug policies and non-discrimination standards.

"I look forward to advancing this comprehensive bill that will allow Uber, Lyft and similar companies to begin operating outside of New York City", Seward said in a statement.

Austrian govt seeks to ban full-face veil in public
The ban would apply to the burqa and niqabs, which cover all or most of the face and are often worn by conservative Muslim women. The announcement was met with a backlash from Islamic groups and Austrian Muslims, who slammed the plan as discriminatory.

This Senate bill differs from the executive budget proposal by significantly cutting the taxes to be paid by ride-share customers to make it more attractive for businesses to operate here.

Monday's move "helps to close the upstate-downstate divide,". The senators who supported the measure, he said, "have gone soft on public safety, tarnished their legislative records and capitulated to Uber's high-priced lobbyists".

Buffalo is now the second-largest USA city without Uber.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo had a message for western New Yorkers during his latest State of the State...

"The same rule must apply to fingerprint background checks that are already mandatory for Uber, Lyft and other ridesharing companies in New York City. Now, the State Assembly is in the driver's seat, and it's time for the State Assembly to approve this legislation".
