7 magnitude quake rocks Surigao City

Map of magnitude 6.5 earthquake that struck the southern Philippines

At least three people were killed and 80 injured after a 6.5 magnitude natural disaster hit Philippines' Surigao city, officials said on Saturday.

Damage has been also found on the runway of the Surigao City Domestic Airport, forcing the cancellation of all flights.

Governor of Surigao del, Sol Matugas sai, the quake struck 14 kilometers northwest of Surigao City in Surigao del Norte province, last night.

Most of injured were hurt by falling objects at the height of the natural disaster that delivered more than 100 aftershocks since Friday evening, with magnitudes ranging from 2.0 to 3.7. "We're still doing a rapid needs and damage assessment", said Civil Defence director Antonio Gonzales, as reported.

Earlier media reports put the death toll at 3, saying that at least 7 were injured.

Hospital staff temporarily brought bed-ridden patients outside until the aftershocks eased. In Surigao's downtown area, the facade of a number of buildings were heavily cracked, their glass windows shattered with canopies and debris falling on parked cars on the street below.

At least 11 towns were affected by the quake, which also damaged the provincial capitol, two major bridges, and other infrastructure.

Matugas sought national assistance for the fix of damaged infrastructures-destroying the airport runway, provincial capitol, bridges and buildings, including hospitals, hotels and schools which are threatening safety and affecting the flow of goods to affected areas.

No tsunami warnings were released by the authorities, but the extent of the damage was so huge that it cut off electricity in the city and left deep cracks on roads, including the airport's runway.

At the coast guard office, plates and other objects fell to the ground, he said.

"The shaking was so strong I could hardly stand", Elopre said, adding that village leaders asked many residents to move to a high school building on higher ground.

The last major quake that struck Surigao, an impoverished region also dealing with a communist insurgency, was in the 1800s, said Renato Solidum, head of the Philippines' seismic agency.

In 2013, a magnitude-7.1 quake struck the central Philippines near a town in Bohol province and killed at least 183 people and injured 583 people.
