Braves close to acquiring All-Star Brandon Phillips

Brandon Phillips

The Atlanta Braves have acquired Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips in exchange for a pair of minor league pitchers, according to ESPN's Buster Olney.

Fox Sports reported Saturday the sides were close to a deal. Even so, it's a surprising reversal given that Phillips, a Georgia native who owns a home in Atlanta, had previously blocked a deal to the Braves in November, one of several he has scuttled over the years.

FanRag Sports' Jon Heyman later said the teams were hoping to finalize the trade by Monday.

Phillips, 35, is in the final year of a six-year, $72.5 million extension that he signed in 2012. They are far from being contenders as they play in a very tough NL Central division with the Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates. He appeared to be penciled in as the team's everyday second baseman thus the quick acquisition of Phillips. He spent part of previous year in the International League.

Phillips went to high school in metro Atlanta, attending Redan High School in Stone Mountain.

He posted a.291/.320/.416 slash line in 2016, although Buchanan reported he was dealing with a hairline fracture in his left hand.

Phillips' departure also means Jose Peraza will be the starter while second baseman prospect Dilson Herrera gets more experience.

In his prime, Phillips was a 30-30 threat who played plus defense at the cornerstone. He tallied at least 17 homers and 75 RBIs in seven of his first eight seasons with the Reds after joining the club in 2006 and was an excellent defender, winning four Gold Glove awards. He reached the 30-30 plateau in the two statistics in a breakout 2007 campaign and was a force in the middle of the Reds lineup for three postseason squads. Atlanta found itself in need of a second baseman after Sean Rodriguez was injured in a auto crash late last month.

The Braves have ben fairly aggressive this offseason, as they move into a new stadium, adding Bartolo Colon and R.A. Dickey in free agency as well as trading for Jamie Garcia to bolster their starting rotation.

On Sunday, with Phillips' consent, the two teams finally completed a deal to send him to Atlanta.
