Samsung chief in second grilling over corruption claims

South Korea's special prosecutor said it would again summon Samsung Group scion Lee Jae Yong to question him on suspicion of bribery, as it investigates a graft scandal that has engulfed the country's president.

The prosecution has also identified four other Samsung executives as suspects and have summoned three of them.

Lee, described as a key suspect in the scandal, narrowly avoided being formally arrested last month when the prosecutors accused him of bribery involving almost $40 million.

Lee Jae-yong, Samsung Electronics vice chairman and the son of the Samsung group chairman Lee Kun-hee, has been quizzed multiple times over his role in the scandal that has rocked the nation.

Mr Lee, the de facto head of the Samsung Group and vice-chairman of Samsung Electronics, spent most of the day at the investigator's offices, along with two other executives, including Samsung Electronics president Park Sang Jin.

The scandal centres on Park's confidante, Choi Soon-sil, who is accused of using her ties to the president to force local firms to "donate" almost $70 million to two non-profit foundations which Choi allegedly used for personal gain.

At the parliamentary hearing, Samsung admitted giving a total of 20.4bn won (£16m; $17.46m) to the two foundations, but denied seeking favours in return.

The funding included sponsorship for the equestrian career of Choi's daughter, who is under arrest in Denmark, after being sought by South Korean authorities. Ms Park was impeached in December over her... The secret confidante is on trial for charges including corruption and coercion. Park formally remains president but has been stripped of power until the Constitutional Court decides whether to back the decision.
