North Korean leader's brother reported killed in Malaysia

Japanese Prime Minister Abe US President Trump

The late North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, who died in late 2011, had two sons, Kim Jong Nam and Kim Jong Un, from two different mothers.

"Based on initial investigations, we have a woman who appears to be Korean approaching the victim before suddenly covering his head", Mat told Berita Harian on Monday night. He was also said to be close to Jang Song-thaek, who was reportedly executed in a 2013 purge ordered by Kim Jong-un. Although he disavowed any continued interest in the leadership, North Korea watchers invariably raised his name as a potential replacement in the case of a coup d'etat against Kim Jong Un.

Kim Jong Nam's father was former North Korean leader Kim Jong Il.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported the suspects had apparently fled the scene, but that Malaysian authorities expect North Korea was behind the alleged assassination.

Kim Jong-nam had been living overseas for years after apparently falling out of favor with his father for attempting to enter Japan on a fake passport in 2001.

None of these sources could be immediately verified. He claimed he wanted "to visit Tokyo Disneyland". Up until about 2012, Kim Jong Nam was said to be, a Chinese administrative region the Week once compared to Las Vegas.

Jong-nam is survived by his son, Kim Han-sol, who is now a college student in France and has been under police protection since 2013.

A TV screen showed pictures of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and his older brother Kim Jong Nam, left, at the Seoul Railway Station in Seoul today.

The US government believes that Kim Jong-nam's death was likely the work of North Korean agents, a government source told Reuters on Tuesday. "Looking at a family tree one can see how complex the breakdown actually is, with little to actually determine the state of Kim Jong Un and his relationship with his siblings".

Kim Jong Nam's first cousin and childhood playmate, a defector, was shot outside his home in South Korea in 1997.

Jong-Un has been trying to strengthen his grip on power in the face of growing global pressure over his country's nuclear and missile programmes.

The dead brother has mainly spent time in China and South-East Asia in recent years, the reports said. Agents on behalf of the North Korean government have targeted defectors with poisoned needles in the past, although the details of Kim's death remain unknown.

The reported death came ahead of planned birthday celebrations Thursday for the country's late ruler Kim Jong Il, father of both Kims. "Personally I am against third-generation succession", he told Japan's Asahi TV in 2010, before his younger brother had succeeded their father.

As the eldest son, why did Kim not become leader?
