Dolphins acquire Julius Thomas from Jaguars

Executing a multiple-player trade in the National Football League is rare because of all the fluid parts, and it appears that the Dolphins have backed off their desire to acquire tight end Julius Thomas from the Jacksonville Jaguars in a deal for left tackle Branden Albert.

Another one is the players involved obviously have to pass physicals for it to work.

On Monday the sides reached an impasse, and Thomas was taken out of the Albert deal as Miami accepted a late-round pick for a player they had planned to release last week.

Moving on from Albert saves the Dolphins about $7.2 million in cap space for 2017. That all still appears to be true, but according to Ian Rapoport, Thomas is headed to South Beach after all, albeit in a separate deal.

Albert and Thomas are both expected to need to restructure their current contracts if a trade were to be completed. Luke Bowanko is the only player on the Jaguars roster listed as a center, including Linder, who is still listed as a guard. Following an initial report in the Miami Herald, NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo reported that there is "optimism it'll all get worked out". Had Albert not gone trade would not be made and he would have ultimately been cut by the March 9th deadline. Albert told Kelly. "It's the business of the game".

Albert has two years left on his contract and part of the discussions between the Jaguars and his camp could be about re-doing of the deal that includes more years and more guaranteed money.

But now Thomas could be getting reunited with Dolphins coach Adam Gase, who ran the offense in Denver that the 28-year-old tight end flourished in.

"He's one of the most gifted athletes I've seen, and it's hard for me to say that because I'm competitive", Albert said of Tunsil. In the two seasons Gase was the offensive coordinator for the Broncos, Thomas recorded 108 catches for 1,277 yards and scored 24 touchdowns.
