Le Pen meets Lebanese PM Hariri

Frankreich Erste Runde der Regionalwahlen 2015 Marine Le Pen

Le Pen has tried to raise her global profile and press her pro-Christian stance with her visit to Lebanon, a former French protectorate.

"I will not put on the veil", she proclaimed.

Journalists shouted back that the two situations were not comparable because one is a state visit while the other is to a religious body.

Ms Le Pen was born into the National Front party as the youngest daughter of long-time president Jean-Marie Le Pen.

French law bans headscarves in the public service and for high school pupils, in the name of church-state separation and equal rights for women.

French legislation bans headscarves in classrooms.

Eléonore Vidal, 28, a NGO project manager from Wandsworth, said she initially liked "serious and honest" Mr Fillon but is now reconsidering her vote.

The headscarf incident occurred ahead of a scheduled meeting with Lebanon's grand mufti, Sheikh Abdel-Latif Derian.

But upon arriving for the meeting, she said she was surprised to be told a headscarf was required and refused to wear the garment. Following a discussion with his aides that lasted a few minutes, she refused and returned to her auto.

'Hasty, irrational and unconstitutional': High Court's damning verdict on SA's ICC withdrawal
At a minimum, the ruling will delay South Africa's withdrawal from the ICC, which had been scheduled to take effect in October. The DA contended that parliament's approval was required before the notice could be delivered to the UN.

Macron will be on more familiar territory in London, where the former economy minister will also meet Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond at 15:30 GMT, the spokesman said.

"They tried to impose that on me, as though it was a fait accompli". In the same Elabe poll, Marine Le Pen was seen to be closing the gap between herself and the two contenders in the second round - Macron would take 59 per cent to le Pen's 41 per cent.

Le Pen has spoken out about the salary deductions saying: "I formally contest this unilateral and illegal decision taken by political opponents ... without proof and without waiting for a judgment from the court action I have started". "If (you don't like it) never mind".

"This is the protocol", the statement said. "The Edict House regrets such inappropriate behavior at such meetings", he added.

French centrist François Bayrou on Wednesday offered to form a political alliance with presidential candidate Emmanuel Macron, opting not to run for president himself because of what he called grave risks facing the country.

She said she told Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri that there is "no viable and workable solution" to the Syrian civil war beyond choosing between Assad and Daesh. She has refused and is now having it deducted from her MEP's salary.

Both Le Pen and Fillon are embroiled in financial scandals. While the terrorist militia Hezbollah - which is represented in the cabinet - is an active supporter on the ground of the Assad regime, many Sunnis sympathize with the anti-Assad opposition. We can not ask the Lebanese people to forget the crimes of the Syrian regime against it and we can not return en masse (Syrians) while there is the Syrian regime.

In this week's In the Field, senior foreign reporter Callum Paton and France-based journalist Colin Randall, help to make sense of the most unusual French election since the last time a Le Pen came close to winning the French presidency, in 2002.
