MPs debate Trump's state visit to Britain

Demonstrators will gather outside the Buchanan galleries in central Glasgow and at the Mound in Edinburgh, where people will also protest for the rights of European Union nationals.

Trump opponents plan to demonstrate outside parliament in London as legislators hold a debate Monday.

While MPs debated the petitions, thousands of people gathered outside of Parliament to protest the rhetoric and policies put forth by Trump and his administration. We all disagree fundamentally with many things he has said, but he is there.

"We know the values that Trump represents". "I would say that Donald Trump has done nothing to be honored for".

"They are concerned about a President who has welcomed white supremacists ... into his close inner circle", he added.

"And even in the first weeks of his presidency he has had a viscerally anti-immigrant line". "We are greatly concerned about the actions that he has taken - extraordinary actions, blundering into frozen conflicts around the planet that needed delicate handling, that needed the microsurgery taken in the past by statesmen". For instance, most people here think that I am on the far right of the political spectrum in this House, but here I am, a person who warmly supports gun control, who opposed the Iraq war and who relies entirely on the NHS. The order was brought to halt by a federal judge.

The debate in Westminster Hall, a secondary chamber of the House of Commons usually reserved for fringe issues, is inconsequential since it's non-binding and Prime Minister Theresa May has made clear she will ignore the petition.

However a parliamentary debate was triggered after more than 1.85m people signed an online petition calling on the Government to withdraw the invitation.

Mr Flynn also compared the USA president's behaviour to a "petulant child" as he encouraged ministers to avoid making the mistakes of the past when "very unsavoury characters" have received invitations for state visits.

'Hasty, irrational and unconstitutional': High Court's damning verdict on SA's ICC withdrawal
At a minimum, the ruling will delay South Africa's withdrawal from the ICC, which had been scheduled to take effect in October. The DA contended that parliament's approval was required before the notice could be delivered to the UN.

Calls for the state visit to be cancelled have been supported by London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who condemned the president's "cruel and shameful" policies.

Barack Obama only received an invitation after 758 days, while it took 978 days before his predecessor, George W Bush, was offered a state visit, compared with seven days for Mr Trump.

It can't be repeated enough, so let's just say it one more time: the United Kingdom did not ban Trump from visiting their country.

"We didn't [do] this for Kennedy, we didn't do the for Truman, we didn't do this for Reagan", David Lammy said.

A number of MPs said Trump should have been invited to an official visit, a step down from a state visit.

Labour's Paul Flynn pointed out that a state visit was a "rare privilege" given to only two other USA presidents since the 1950s - George W. Bush and Barack Obama.

Paul Flynn (Lab, Newport West) was not one of them. However, the United States has a "pretty nasty virus" today, she noted. It's not likely to derail his state visit this time either.

"America is our greatest ally". "It has stood by us, shoulder to shoulder, in our hour of need, as we did in their hour of need, particularly during 9/11". I made the point then, and will make it now, that it is unwise of us to try to transfer our own views and prejudices to the other side of the Atlantic.
