Presidents Day highlights tragedies, triumphs of America's leaders

George Washington

If you have Monday off for the Presidents Day holiday, you might have trouble finishing all of your errands.

The day was originally meant to celebrate George Washington's birthday, which is Feb. 22, but now is held on the third Monday of February to honor all the nation's leaders, with a particular emphasis on Washington and Lincoln.

"I thought the goal of Presidents' Day was getting steep discounts on mattresses and furniture".

And the several states have a different name for this government paid vacation day. Others merely want a suspension: "We should cancel Presidents' Day for the next 4 years", fumed Dimitri Zavala.

And then there is the Great State of Louisiana.

Since it's a federal holiday, banks and government buildings are closed. It's Washington's Birthday. At least, that's the holiday. We truly are a very special state.

When George Washington was born, the date was February 11, 1731.

Iraqi forces push into ISIL-held southern Mosul
About 160,000 civilians have been displaced since the start of the offensive in October, U.N. officials say. Mosul is the largest city it captured in both countries and its de facto capital in Iraq.

"Which is it? Washington's Birthday or Presidents' Day?"

"Do we also celebrate Abraham Lincoln's birthday on Presidents' Day?" It will never be on the 22nd, which is when it actually is. This is principally due to the fact Washington was a slave owner.

But even if the professoratti earnestly believe Lincoln's greatness eclipsed that of Washington, the latter is indisputably the Father of Our Country, leading from the battlefield to the constitutional convention to the presidency. Around half the states have state holidays honoring both Lincoln and Washington today.

While Washington's birthday was celebrated on February 22nd until the 20th Century, Congressional leaders moved to a pass the Monday Holiday Law in 1968 to "provide uniform annual observances of certain legal public holidays on Mondays".

"In 1968, Congress debated whether to combine the two presidents' birthdays into one holiday but decided against it". Here's a brief guide to navigate this federal holiday without wasting too much time heading to locations that are closed. It's marked with a day off for many in the private sector and most of the public sector. On no account can the 45th President be allowed to enjoy his day.

The other 42 have their own attraction at Disney World, they don't need a quasi-holiday as well. But, there is a reason the federal holiday is simply Washington's Birthday.
