Conservative victory in northern England could spell doom for Labour's Corbyn
Trudy Harrison has won a historic victory in the Copeland by-election for the Conservatives winning by a majority of 2,147 votes over Labour.
The Conservatives captured the west Cumbrian seat for the first time in more than 80 years, reversing the traditional pattern of governing parties losing by-elections while in office. Trudy Harrison for the Conservative party not only beat Labour's Gillian Troughton with 13,748 votes to 11,601 on a turnout of 51% - she also boosted vote share by 8.5%.

"We agree with Corbyn on a lot of priorities: a growth orientated economy built on public investment; a social and youth agenda; fiscal justice and policies to tackle tax evasion; a common and shared EU migration policy; and closer European cooperation on defence". Lisa Nandy, who left the party's front bench last summer, is the MP for Wigan and has long anxious about the disconnect between Labour MPs and the towns they represent.
Asked by reporters on Friday whether he accepted that Labour's problems were his fault, Mr Corbyn said simply: "No".

This defeat is the latest loss taken by Labour Party in what has been a stunning collapse of the party over the past decade. A pragmatic approach. I think if Labour can reach out and explain we need to get the best possible deal we can and have the best possible relationship with Europe.
Andrew Gwynne MP, Labour's campaign manager, was visibly upset after the result was announced.
Labour did manage to cling on to Stoke-on-Trent Central in a second by-election, but still lost voters.
"What's important now is discussing the whole thing and what happened in Copeland".
