Wilbur Ross confirmed to lead Commerce Department

Will Trump get his commerce secretary?

Washington D.C. [United States], Feb. 28 (ANI): Wilbur Ross's name has been approved by the Senate, as President Donald Trump's Secretary of Commerce. He also has pledged not to make new investments once confirmed.

As secretary of commerce, the 79-year-old will have a heavy hand in negotiating trade deals, as well as renegotiating the agreements Trump railed against during the campaign, such as the North American Free Trade Agreement.

"I also understand that at the end of the day, each of our trading partners want access to our market".

"I am not anti-trade", he said.

As commerce secretary, Mr. Ross has oversight over a number of agencies important to ports, including the International Trade Administration, which promotes US trade and investment, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which is vital to maritime commerce since its weather service and aids to navigation divisions provide important safety and efficiency programs for mariners.

"He plans to keep making money from one of his major oil shipping companies while working as Commerce Secretary", Warren said. "But I have a feeling that's about to change in a big way".

Mr Ross will be one of the most seasoned business leaders on the president's economic team.

Bloomberg values his fortune at $3 billion and, in financial disclosures released last month, he revealed assets topping $336 million, including at least $150 million held in bank accounts and an art collection worth more than $50 million.

During his confirmation hearing, Ross expressed support for "sensible trade", noting he has had direct experience with unfair trade in the steel, textile, and auto parts businesses and other sectors.

The bank's former chairman, Vladimir Strzhalkovsky, is reportedly close to President Putin, a fellow former KGB agent.

Mr Schumer accused Mr Ross of having questionable business links to Russian Federation and described an apparent reluctance by the White House to answer questions as another example of the Trump administration "abandoning transparency".

Mr Ross also received a second letter last Friday from Senator Cory Booker with more detailed questions about possible Russian Federation links.

Twenty-one Democratic Senators joined with all of the Republicans in the chamber to approve Ross' nomination.

Senator Nelson said senators were "troubled and frustrated" by the White House move.
