Italian volcano wakes up in fiery, but harmless, display

Mount Etna is in Sicily Italy

Mount Etna has erupted in a fiery show of lava in eastern Sicily - sending giant orange fountains of lava spewing into the air.

The volcano, which is one of the most active in the world, has remained generally dormant in the last two years.

Europe's largest volcano burst into life on Monday sparking fears for holiday goers that their flights may be disrupted.

Italy's Mount Etna volcano became active on January 23 and Strombolian or episodic explosions have rocked its southeast crater.

Italy's Mount Etna volcano first became active on January 23 and has experienced a series of eruptions ever since. The Sicilian landmark's last major eruption was in 1992.

8-year-old girl shot to death after crash, police say
Police said they are searching for the dark four-door sedan and the driver of the Pontiac. "We just don't know". The 8-year-old girl was identified as DeMaree Atkins, who was inside of the black Honda Accord.

Mount Etna is at it again. The first recorded observation of Etna's eruptions dates way back to 425 BC.

During that eruption, as lava threatened to overtake a Sicilian village, USA marines lent a hand during the aptly named Operation Volcano Buster.

There is no direct danger to the towns or airport on the island but authorities will continue to monitor the growing ash cloud. A team flew helicopters over Etna and dropped concrete blocks at the edge of the lava tunnel to plug the hole.

According to NBC News, the eruption is not said to be unsafe, and the nearby airport of Catania is still open and fully operational.
