US Airstrikes in Yemen Hit Area Where Navy SEAL Was Killed

Van Jones on Trump's honoring of widow of Navy SEAL: Trump 'became president' in that moment

USA intelligence officials are now trying to identify hundreds of al-Qaida operatives with contacts gleaned from a late night Jan 29 raid by Navy SEAL team 6 deep inside Yemen, CNN reports.

Residents said they believed US drones were used in Thursday's strike.

Though Trump provided no specifics, a senior US official said earlier that the intelligence included the group's explosives manufacturing, targeting, training and recruitment practices.

"The strikes will degrade the AQAP's ability to coordinate external terror attacks and limit their ability to use territory seized from the legitimate government of Yemen as a safe space for terror plotting", Davis said in a statement.

Davis said Tuesday's strikes targeted militants, equipment, infrastructure, heavy weapons systems and fighting positions.

It was not immediately clear if the strikes were conducted against targets identified from information collected from the January raid, which left one member of the Navy's SEAL Team 6 dead and three others wounded, and which killed about two dozen civilians.

USA commander downplays chance of big Iraq, Syria troop hike
Quick calls to Russian forces through "deconfliction channels" stopped the bombing, he said. He referred to the Syrian forces to disclose the number and extent of the casualties.

A senior USA official told ABC News that "valuable intelligence" was gathered from the raid. It includes information on al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula's training techniques and targeting priorities, said the official, who wasn't able to discuss details of the classified military operation publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. Another official said four al-Qaida militants were killed in the airstrikes that targeted Shabwa's Saeed district.

A week ago, Human Rights Watch called upon the U.S.to carry out an investigation saying that the USA needs to "go a step further and provide a full accounting of possible laws-of-war violations".

Military sources are contradicting Pres. Donald Trump's claim that the botched raid in Yemen on January 29 was "a highly successful raid that generated large amounts of vital intelligence".

Some critics say the information gathered in the raid is not worth the loss of life.

"Almost everything went wrong", a USA defense official told NBC News after the operation.

The militant group has taken advantage of a civil war pitting the Iran-aligned Shia Houthis against the Saudi-backed government of the internationally recognised government of President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi to try to widen its control and influence in the impoverished Arabian Peninsula country, one of the poorest in the Middle East.
