Elon Musk has another ambitious energy project and this time it's free

The sweltering heat couldn't come at a worse time for the state of South Australia, often referred to as S.A. It mightn't be so simple.

Elon Musk has risen to the challenge of fixing South Australia's power crisis in 100 days.

In the meanwhile, Atlassian CEO Mike Cannon-Brookes tweeted out to Musk questioning the integrity of the 100-day claim.

Those tweets have already set discussions in motion.

To this, Musk answered in his own sassy way, saying, "Tesla will get the system installed and working 100 days from contract signature or it is free".

But experts are divided about whether Tesla is really the answer.

"If you had storage deployed during the blackout [in] South Australia you wouldn't have had the blackout", he said.

Millions wait, and wait, for April the giraffe to give birth
On Feb. 28, the Denver Zoo giraffe gave birth to an unexpected baby boy, later named Dobby, without fanfare in the early morning. The zoo predicted that a cold front moving in Thursday and into the weekend might "shake things up" for the pregnant giraffe.

The blackouts in late 2016 left much of South Australia without power, and were initially blamed on the state's heavy reliance on renewable energy. "Similar sized installation", Musk told Gizmodo over Twitter DM. "Would they have helped Adelaide get through three or four hours?"

Update: Ars clarified that the total cost of a 100 MWh system does not appear to include labor or shipping. He said in a separate comment that he spoke with Jay Weatherill, premier of South Australia, and was "very impressed" that the government was committed to a "smart, quick solution".

Tesla and its partner Panasonic began mass producing lithium-ion battery cells at the Gigafactory two months ago.

In terms of cost, Musk quoted $250 per kilowatt hour for the system, adding that the company is "moving to fixed and open pricing and terms for all [its] products". The CEO said if he is not able to complete the project within 100 days, he would not charge a penny.

"The way the spot market works and way the electricity market is now structured means that battery storage just can't compete at the same level".

That's not only good news for the estimated 1.6 million Australian households with rooftop solar, but also for power companies, who could stack the batteries to create massive energy banks. But speaking to HuffPost Australia, several experts have said that is untrue.
