Heaviest Woman's Surgery To Reduce Weight A Success
Eman Ahmed Abd El Aty, an Egyptian woman who is the world's heaviest person, has underwent a successful weight-reduction surgery in India and is now on course towards losing tens of kilos over the next few days. Eman successfully underwent a Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy on March 7.
The 37-year-old who is being treated for life-threatening obesity in the city, repeatedly bobs and sways her head and shoulders.
A spokeswoman for head doctor Muffazal Lakdawala said: "Eman has lost over 100kg and has been shedding weight gradually on a daily basis with all the treatment and support".
Abd El Aty, 36, had to be removed from her Alexandria home - which she hadn't left in 25 years - via crane.
Once Abd El Aty is fit enough to fly, she will go back to Egypt.
The spokesperson told the BBC that she was likely to lose more weight in the coming months.
One of the surgeons now treating her, Dr. Muffazal Lakdawala, said he believed Abd El Aty had obsesity-related lymphedema, which also causes swelling, and not elephantiasis.
With the help of bariatrics surgery, in one year, patients can lose up to 75 per cent of their body weight.
Eman had suffered from thyroid problems since she was a child, but it wasn't until her stroke that her weight bloated to more than 1,000 pounds and she really began to deteriorate.
Bariatric surgery, also known as weight loss surgery, is used as a last resort to treat people who are dangerously obese and carrying an excessive amount of body fat. And for now, the focus is on correcting all her associated medical problems.
The Saifee Hospital or the SaveEmanCause has not yet commented on the exact reduction in weight, but it is learnt that it is more than 100 kg.
The doctors have been able to operate Eman smoothly since all her body parameters are cooperating well.
Lakdawala said if Ahmed responded well to the surgery, he hoped to take between 155 and 175 pounds off her weight before sending her home.
Her request for a visa to get to Mumbai was refused at the start, but she then sent a tweet to India's foreign minister, who became personally involved in the case.
