Confirming the news to Jacaranda FM News in his capacity as one of the Vice Presidents of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), Sascoc President Gideon Sam said as an organisation, the CGF felt there was no point in asking South Africa to proceed if there were serious financial issues.

Liverpool's hopes of hosting the 2022 Commonwealth Games have been boosted with Durban set to bow out over financial issues.

Sports minister Fikile Mbalula had earlier said at a media briefing, "I don't want to raise your expectations and say everything looks good, it doesn't because we don't agree on the fundamentals and that is the operational budget".

"The CGF is fully confident and committed to delivering a successful Commonwealth Games for athletes and fans in 2022".

Durban's failure is a major embarrassment for South Africa, with the bid initially hailed as historic as the first African host of the Commonwealth Games.

The decision was made by the CGF over the weekend.

Dusseldorf police: Several people injured in ax attack at train station
Another police spokesman said police were investigating whether more attackers had been involved but had no indication of that. Regional police said on Twitter that Dusseldorf's station is now closed due to a "comprehensive" police response there.

"It is with disappointment that the detailed review has concluded that there is a significant departure from the undertakings provided in Durban's bid and as a result a number of key obligations and commitments in areas such as governance, venues, funding and risk management/assurance have not been met under the revised proposition", a CGF statement said.

"This is a huge disappointment for us and for the whole African continent", he told Reuters.

The city won the rights to host the multi-sport event in September 2015 but South African officials missed crucial deadlines - including the establishment of a local organising committee and payment guarantees. It is already bidding to host the games in 2026.

Liverpool has already expressed interest in replacing Durban.

The 2018 games will be held in Sydney, Australia, with the countdown officially being set off today at Buckingham Palace.
