French Airport Back to Normalcy after Attack

A man who tried to seize a soldier's gun at Paris Orly Airport was involved just hours earlier in a carjacking and another shooting at a traffic stop, French authorities said Saturday.

Now, a toxicology result has found Belgacem was under the influence of alcohol, coupled with consumption of cocaine and cannabis.

He had previously been reported to police for espousing radical Islam during one of his prison terms for robbery and drug dealing but a search of his home in 2015 revealed nothing.

The 39-year-old French national tried to grab a Famas assault rifle from a young female solider of the air force who was patrolling the airport as part of the "Sentinelle" security operation before being shot dead, Molins added.

Paris prosecutor Francois Molins told a press conference the attacker had shouted: I am here to die for Allah.

A petrol can and a copy of the Koran were found in his backpack at the scene of the attack, according to Paris prosecutor Francois Molins.

Investigators are searching for information relating to the attacks, such as the extent of Belgacem's radicalization and whether he had premeditated the shootings or acted spontaneously.

Belgacem's father told Europe 1 radio: "My son was never a terrorist".

"He never attended prayers". A police officer is said have suffered non-life threatening injuries after Belgacem stole his gun and shot him.

The other two soldiers on duty at Orly fired a total of eight rounds at Ben Belgacem.

Dovish Fed, weaker dollar lifts gold to one-week high
A weaker dollar typically strengthens the investment appeal of precious metals, which are priced in the US currency. Prices on benchmark 10-year Treasuries fell 8/32 to yield 2.531 percent, up from 2.504 percent late on Wednesday.

The searches - authorized under France's official "state of emergency", passed after the Paris attacks - have been frequently criticized as violating the civil liberties of those searched and detained, and rights advocates have pushed the government to define "Islamist radicalism" more clearly.

"Her two comrades thought it was necessary - and they were right - to open fire to protect her and especially to protect all the people who were around", said French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian.

Police said they also questioned and released a brother and cousin of Belgacem.

Then, 90 minutes later, he attacked the military patrol at Orly, causing panic and the shutdown of the French capital's second-biggest airport.

"The man succeeded in seizing the weapon of a soldier".

But he ruled out any link between the attack and the two-round French presidential election in April and May, noting that France has been battling extremist threats for years. A bloodied t-shirt and identification documents were later found inside the vehicle.

He fired at police with a pellet gun before escaping in a auto that was later found abandoned.

"He said to me: 'Daddy, please forgive me".

Inside, he threw a bag containing chemicals to the ground before attacking an army patrol, according to Paris prosecutor François Molins who gave a briefing on Saturday.
