Resolve Ayodhya dispute amicably: SC; mixed reactions follow

Settle Ayodhya dispute amicably Supreme Court

Just days after BJP's sweeping victory in Uttar Pradesh and Yogi Adityanath taking over as the state's new chief minister, the Ram Mandir issue is back on the national centrestage.

He said though the RSS was not directly involved in the litigation, it would support any decision taken by the 'Dharma Sansad, ' which spearheaded the Ram Janmabhumi movement. "The Lucknow bench of high court has accepted that there are enough proof of the existence of the temple on the site of Babri structure", he said.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday favoured an amicable settlement to the Ramjanmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute in Ayodhya and offered to act as mediator, which was welcomed by the BJP but ruled out by the Babri Masjid Action Committee and others.

After his farewell speech in Lok Sabha, new UP CM and Hindutva mascot Yogi Adityanath also spoke to media on Supreme Court's observation on Ayodhya matter.

"We welcome this and both sides should sit to resolve the differences and find a way out".

However, the three-judge bench said both parties must be willing to adopt, what he called "give a bit and take a bit" to ensure meaningful and honest negotiations.

"It is an issue of sentiment and religion".

House Intelligence chairman: 'No evidence of collusion' between Trump camp, Russian Federation
The Senate Intelligence Committee has scheduled its first public hearing on the Russian Federation question for March 30, and Sen. Michael Rogers on Capitol Hill in Washington , Jan. 5, 2017, before testifying before a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing.

Speaking on the earlier efforts to resolve the dispute through dialogue, Togadia said: "In 1991, then Prime Minister Chandrashekhar tried to get the VHP and the Babri Masjid Action Committee sit across the table to amicably resolve the matter". Chief Justice J.S. Khehar said if the parties want him to mediate then he is ready for the task. But an out-of-court settlement is not possible. The RSS will not decide.

During the hearing, senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy said that several attempts were made to settle the matter through negotiations, but have failed. We are also ready if he nominates a team for hearing the matter.

The court asked parties concerned to sit together to arrive at a consensus and asked Swamy to consult the parties and inform it about the decision on March 31.

The proposed Ram temple in Ayodhya has been one of the most controversial and divisive issues facing the country in the last 25 years.

The other side claims the land by adverse possession. For the Chief Justice of India to now throw the ball back to the litigants in the Ram-Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute is to lend the imprimatur of his high office to a proposal that is vulnerable to political misuse.

Meanwhile, Vishwa Hindu Parishad chief Pravin Togadia asked the Modi Government to bring out legislation to build the Ram temple. However, the site is also regarded as the birthplace of Hindu deity Rama.

The above Twitter reaction seemingly came from a right-wing account which looks fairly supportive of constructing the Ram Temple.
