Nunes, Comey clash on whether Federal Bureau of Investigation chief invited to House Russia

Asked about the New York Times report at his daily briefing, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer would only say that classified material would be reviewed by the relevant committee members.

That closely maps with how Rep. Devin Nunes described the information he viewed at the White House last week, and subsequently briefed Trump on during a hastily arranged session.

An FBI official said earlier in the day Tuesday that the agency does not want to get stuck in the middle of the tug of war between Republicans and Democrats on the House intelligence committee.

In a brief statement Thursday after the Times report, Nunes spokesman Jack Langer said that "Chairman Nunes will not confirm or deny speculation about his source's identity, and he will not respond to speculation from anonymous sources".

Cohen-Watnick was recruited to the transition team by McMaster's predecessor, Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, who resigned as national security adviser last month after acknowledging that he had misled administration officials about a phone call he had with the Russian ambassador in December.

Nunes, who has refused to identify his sources, has been criticized by his congressional colleagues for sharing information with President Trump before consulting with other members of the intelligence committee.

The United States is no longer making removing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad a focus of its policy in the war-torn country, the US ambassador to the United Nations says.

Maye hits late jumper to lift North Carolina to Final Four
Everybody's crying and it doesn't feel good, but we had a great run and I love everybody on this team. Make no mistake, though, the Tar Heels haven't played their best basketball in the tournament.

If, in fact, it was info White House staffers found in the ordinary course of their work, why all the "cloak and dagger stuff" with Nunes, instead of taking the information straight to Trump, Schiff questioned.

Times reporter Maggie Haberman, who co-authored the story, tweeted that Ellis showed the information to Nunes while Cohen-Watnick had seen it in "another context".

Spicer said the information being made available to lawmakers was uncovered by the National Security Council.

Instead, the White House continued to sidestep queries about its role in showing Nunes classified information that appears to have included transcripts of foreign officials discussing Trump's transition to the presidency, according to current and former USA officials.

In his response, the Democrat said that the full committee should be able to see the materials.

And the report said the intercepted communications are not related to the investigation into Russian influence, a point Nunes has stressed publicly. The Times report indicated that two National Security Council staffers allegedly presented Nunes with documents validating President Donald Trump's Twitter claim that Obama wiretapped him.
