World Cup slots for Africa approved by Federation Internationale de Football Association, await ratification

World Cup slots for Africa approved by Federation Internationale de Football Association, await ratification

Along with the expansion to 48 participants beginning in 2026, world soccer's governing body is now proposing new World Cup slots for each region.

The proposed plan is to give additional slots to each confederation but two could be decided between six teams.

Federation Internationale de Football Association also said its bureau - comprising Infantino and the six confederations presidents - wants automatic entry for host teams to come from a region's quota.

The two teams with the highest ranking would play the winners of two "semi-finals", with the winners of those "finals" qualifying.

The proposals will be submitted to the FIFA Council at its next full meeting in Bahrain in May for a final decision.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has also hinted he will favour a co-hosting of the event.

The World Cup host continent would provide the sixth playoff team.

Van Gaal to help in search for new Netherlands coach
Assistant Fred Grim temporarily takes over on Tuesday in the friendly against Italy in Amsterdam . Netherlands skipper Arjen Robben said the defeat in Sofia was a " nightmare ".

The Asian Football Confederation will receive eight berths, one less than they were originally anticipating, with the Confederation of African Football given nine, also a place lower than they had hoped for.

"The Bureau of the Fifa Council, comprised of the Fifa President and the president of each of the six confederations, agreed on (the) proposed allocation", said a Fifa statement.

"In context it's not a direct entry for New Zealand, we still have to win our competition but having to win our competition instead of playing against the fifth best team in South America is a better path for all the teams in Oceania". Two of the three teams from each group will advance to the next round.

The tournament will be played in the host country (ies) and will be used as a test event for the FIFA World Cup.

Ryan Thomas scored twice as the All Whites moved past Fiji in World Cup qualifying in Wellington on Tuesday.

The following broadcasters have been awarded certain media rights with regard to the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The changes will take effect from the 2026 World Cup as the formats for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups has already been decided.
