SpaceX conducts historic launch, landing with "used" rocket

Watch Elon Musk react incredulously to SpaceX's recycled rocket landing: “I'm at a loss for words”

SpaceX blasted off the recycled first stage, or booster, of a Falcon 9 rocket for the first time on Thursday, a feat that could dramatically lower the cost of space travel. A company named SpaceX successfully reused a rocket to launch a satellite into space.

Boosters — the most expensive part of the rocket, according to Musk — typically are discarded following liftoff, sinking into the Atlantic.

After some debate about whether the nosecone could be recovered, Musk said he told his engineering team, "Imagine you had $6 million in cash on a pallet flying through the air that's just going to smash into the ocean".

"It did this mission perfectly", Musk said.

One twitter follower was interested about the Falcon Heavy's geosynchronous transfer orbit (GTO) payload capacity, and Musk answered that it could possibly carry up to 20 percent more than the projected 22,200 kilograms.

Unlike conventional rockets that crash back to Earth after launching their payloads into space, the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket was designed with a booster system to enable it to land upright and, in theory, be used over and over again. The South African-born Musk, Friday, took to Twitter to announce SpaceX's future planning for space exploration, which also includes the take off a Falcon Heavy Rocket by the late of this year's summer.

Ex punk-rocker O'Rourke launches longshot bid against Cruz
The former punk rocker made national headlines earlier this month for going on a bipartisan road trip across the country with Rep. O'Rourke is still relatively unknown in Washington and in Texas, and El Paso has never produced a statewide elected official.

He added that his team were also working on recovering the second "booster" stage, which now burns up in the atmosphere. The Falcon Heavy is the higher variant of the Falcon 9 launch vessel and is made of a common Falcon 9 rocket core, with two extra strap-on boosters, anchored in the first stage of Falcon 9 rocket. But if it is successful, this could prove to be a stepping stone toward the company's desire to reuse entire rockets.

He said it is also a crucial part of his plan to one day establish human colonies on Mars.

SpaceX is developing a viable commercial launch ability, but Musk has not been shy about his ultimate goal of colonizing Mars. The price of the fuel is only about 1% of the total cost of a rocket launch.

Last month, Musk announced that two private citizens have paid a "significant deposit" to fly around the moon late next year on a mission using the Falcon Heavy. That is an wonderful technical feat, but what has everyone's attention is the fact hundreds of millions of dollars can be saved by reusing rockets.

The SES satellite provides communications worldwide. "It's taken us a long time, a lot of hard steps along the way but I'm just incredibly proud of the spaceflight team".
