Assad allies say USA attack on Syria air base crosses 'red lines'
The United States stepped up pressure on Sunday on Russian Federation to rein in Syrian President Bashar Assad, warning that any further chemical attacks would be "very damaging" to their relationship and suggesting there can be no peace in Syria while Assad remains in power.
"I agree with Ambassador Haley that I don't think there's any political solution to the civil war in Syria that doesn't mean that Assad moves aside, because he's tearing up the country", Kaine told host Chuck Todd on NBC's "Meet the Press".
Syria has denied using any chemical agents, and Russian Federation says the USA gave no evidence Syria has chemical weapons.
Kaine said he supported President Trump's decision last Thursday to launch a missile strike in Syria as a response to the Syrian government's chemical weapons attack against a northern Syrian town that took dozens of lives.
"And we have to make sure that we're pushing that process".
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said Sunday that he believes rhetoric from President Donald Trump's administration is "probably partially to blame" for Syria's deadly chemical weapons attack on its civilians last week.
Rouhani said the US strike would not affect Iran's Syria policy, while Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Iran would not withdraw in the face of similar aggressions.
On Sunday, Tillerson emphasized that the administration considers defeating the Sunni militants of Islamic State the most pressing concern in Syria, not ousting Assad.
He said he would call on Russian Federation "to fulfill the obligation it made to the global community when it agreed to be the guarantor of the elimination of the chemical weapons, and why Russian Federation has not been able to achieve that is unclear to me". On Sunday, a joint command center comprised of Russian, Iranian and militia forces supporting Assad said it would respond to any new aggression and increase its support for its ally. The Syrian government has denied it was behind the attack.
But Ms Haley warned that the USA was prepared to "do more" if needed, leaving the door open for more military intervention as the global community awaits a response from President Assad and his allies. "In fact, we were prepared to do more two days ago", McMaster said.
"There is no such thing as Assad yes, but ISIS no", Rubio said. "[What] we are saying is, other countries have to ask themselves some hard questions", he said. "But until then, you have to prove to me that these people are being vetted in a way that we're not putting American citizens at risk, '" she argued. "Clearly they've been incompetent and perhaps they've just simply been out-maneuvered by the Syrians".
