AMD Launches Radeon RX-500 Series; Polaris Evolved for 2017

PowerColor Radeon RX 580

That seems to be one of the themes of AMD's Radeon RX 500 series of GPUs, the successor to the not-very-old RX 400 series. While there are a couple of benchmarks on Radeon RX 500 series particularly on Radeon RX 580 graphics card, categorizing it as XTR or XTX remains cloudy. For example the Core speeds on the AMD RX 580 have been increased from 1120 MHz (AMD RX 480) to 1257 MHz (AMD RX 580). Either figure is a pretty significant jump over the reference 1340 MHz boost clock. On the RX 570 the gap is even bigger since the new card features Core/Boost frequencies of 1168/1244 MHz while the previous model clocked at 926/1206 MHz.

The RX 460 is a bit different from its predecessor, in that it now has more available GPU cores and a higher clock speed.

The base/boost clock speed on the AMD Radeon RX 480 is 1120MHz/1266MHz.

The RX 560 and RX 570 are both iterative improvements of the RX 460 and RX 470 GPUs AMD launched almost a year ago.

AMD's new flagship AMD Radeon RX Vega GPU promises to provide users a graphics card that can finally keep up with its competitor, Nvidia's GPU stack. As part of the RX 500 announcement, AMD's also adding Radeon Chill support for League of Legends and Dota 2-two of the most-played games on the planet. It draws power via a single 8-pin connection, and Gigabyte recommends a 450W or greater power supply for the card. That's just over 100MHz higher than the RX 480. The RX 560, aimed at e-sports players, is around 57 percent faster than the R7 360. The fully-enabled Polaris 11 GPU with 16 CUs gave the Radeon RX 560 1024 Stream Processors, 64 TMUs and 16 ROPs. Though, you'll notice the Radeon RX 570 has one fewer heat-pipe and lacks front and back-plates, so not all Twin Frozr VI coolers are created equal. This GPU was not available in the Radeon RX 400 series and AMD did not have a similar GPU since Oland-base Radeon R7 250.

Starbucks Unicorn Frappuccino: Will anyone over 13 drink this?
It not only changes color but also flavor, with the sweet and fruity taste transforming into tangy and tart once you mix it. Unicorns are all the rage this year, and Starbucks has brewed its own creation to take advantage of the phenomenon.

Priced at $229 (about £180, AU$300) for the 8GB version and $199 (about £160, AU$260) for 4GB, AMD is making a sweeping claim that it will 12% faster than any older $200-$300 GPU when it releases on April 18th. The Polaris 12 packs 8 CUs, for a total of 512 Stream Processors and the RX 550 will be coming with 2GB of GDDR5 memory on a 128-bit memory interface.

Plenty of AMD AIB partners have also unveiled their own versions including Powercolor with its Radeon RX 580 and RX 570 Red Devil and RX 580 and RX 570 Red Dragon versions. So if you're in the market for a new card, there's that.

PC World notes that the RX 570 and RX 580 will go on sale starting today. Despite the manufacturing process maturity, the higher clocks came with a price, since both RX 580 and RX 570 also have a higher power consumption. The Radeon RX 570 Gaming X will boost up to 1280MHz, while the RX 580 Gaming X will boost up to 1395MHz and features 8.1Gb/s memory.

The Aorus Radeon RX 570 comes with a factory overclock to 1,280MHz, which works out to 36MHz over the stock RX 470 spec.
