Dairy farmers worry about trade to Mexico

The U.S. dairy sector and state agriculture officials urged President Trump to take immediate action against Canada's repeated and escalating disregard for its trade obligations under NAFTA.

The letter follows on other Cuomo administration efforts urging the Canadians to rethink their dairy trade policies, including a letter sent by the governor to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last fall that apparently fell on deaf ears.

New York's senators are pushing to change a Canadian trade policy they say is hurting dairy farmers.

"We don't feel good about USA farms going out of business. It's your own responsibility, as a country, to manage your production".

Trump on Tuesday responded to appeals for help from the dairy industry during an event in Wisconsin, where he also renewed his complaints about the North American Free Trade Agreement. The Ottawa-based Dairy Farmers of Canada, which represents 12,000 farms, is confident the Canadian government will "defend and protect" its dairy industry and the economy, a spokeswoman said by phone.

Eight dairy producers who lost contracts earlier this month with Grassland Dairy were picked by Mullins Cheese. Trump promised to work with Wisconsin's congressional delegation to get a solution after the governors of Wisconsin and NY urged him to take action.

Milan's Cristián Zapata pounces late for dramatic derby draw with Inter
But it had been Inter who drew first blood with their first goal before halftime in a derby match since Walter Samuel in 2012. Elsewhere, Cagliari beat Chievo Verona 4-0, Torino drew 1-1 against Crotone and Bologna's match at Palermo ended 0-0.

Standing up for dairy farmers in Wisconsin "demands fair trade with all of our trading partners", Trump said, "and that includes Canada". "We're going to get the solution".

President Donald Trump prepares to speak at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Fla., Thursday, April 6, 2017, after the US fired a barrage of cruise missiles into Syria Thursday night in retaliation for this week's gruesome chemical weapons attack against civilians.

The work would start immediately, he added.

"The whole thing is ridiculous".

"We're going to make some very big changes", he said.

"Unfortunately, it appears that while USA processors were making multi-million dollar investments to meet the growing cross-border market for ultra-filtered milk, the Canadian dairy industry and government were plotting a trade war against our nation's dairy farmers", the governors wrote.
