March For Science On Earth Day To Resist Trump's War On Facts

Earth as seen by the EPIC imager on the DSCOVR satellite

A January 31 New York Times opinion titled, "A Scientists' March on Washington is a Bad Idea" by Robert S. Young, a professor of coastal geology at Western Carolina University, claims that rather than persuading the government to support science, a march will only serve to reaffirm the notion that scientists are an "interest group". Egger now serves as president of the National Association of Geoscience Teachers (NAGT), which has endorsed the national March for Science.

Climate change denial and budget cuts to critical science funding puts us dangerously close to an outright rejection of the expertise of scientists and the knowledge that centuries of scientific inquiry have yielded. I am anxious that my granddaughter, now 2 1/2-years-old, will grow up to live in a world strikingly different from that we enjoyed and prospered from during the last half of the 20th century.

As I approach the end of my career, I am very concerned about what I see going on in my country regarding the rejection of scientific evidence in favor of dogma on important issues such as climate change, legal forensics, vaccines and genetically modified organisms. Executive orders to start the rollback of the Clean Power Plan, lift the federal moratorium on coal leasing on public lands, and green-light the Keystone XL and Dakota Access pipelines pose major threats to Americans' health and environment and the world's climate.

The March for Science, a nationwide push for scientific research funding and awareness, will be held Saturday - Earth Day - with area events in Modesto, Sonora, Yosemite National Park and Merced.

The March for Science coincides with Earth Day. "I don't think we should see this as a one-off event".

"#ScienceMarch also represents a tragic lost opportunity to do better than science's racist, sexist, ableist, colonialist, oppressive past", she tweeted. That's just based on the facts and the data that we work with every day as experts in this field. Fifty-nine percent said it inspired them to "discuss science with people you know". Shortly after, the idea of the "March for Science" was born. Where I live, up in deeply nerdy Cambridge, Massachusetts, there are March for Science posters up all across the city.

"Scientists prefer not to get involved in politics", said environmental scientist Benjamin Cuker to the Daily Press in Virginia.

Homeland chief denies US building deportation force
Kelly has estimated its price tag at $21 billion, while congressional Republicans have put the cost at $12 billion to $15 billion. Together, meth, cocaine, heroin and other opiates resulted in the deaths of some 52,000 Americans in 2015, Kelly said.

The march is meant "to show that people support science and that they recognize the value of science in their lives", said Rich Ribb, an organizer for the march in Rhode Island. "It should not be a political issue". "Growing out of the first Earth Day, Earth Day Network is the world's largest recruiter to the environmental movement, working with more than 50,000 partners in almost 195 countries to build environmental democracy". Democratic thing. Marching for Science on Earth Day is not a partisan activity, nor is advocacy for evidence-based decision-making in government policy.

The March for Science is a celebration of science, organizers said. When politicians cater to fossil fuel interests by denying the basic realities of climate science and pursuing anti-science climate policy, they endanger the jobs, justice, and livelihoods of ordinary people everywhere.

But Michèle Lamont, a Harvard University professor and the president of the American Sociological Association, said the only opposition she's personally heard is from scientists who want the event to be more political.

In the days after the 2017 USA presidential inauguration, resistance to the anti-science stance trumpeted during the 2016 campaign grew in online discussions on Reddit.

I encourage everyone attend and support the combined March for Science and Climate March being held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Paepcke Park (booths and speakers plus a march). "We want science talked about in a factual way". I am proud that reliance on sound science is resulting in great progress.

The campaign - which calls for science to be robustly funded and publicly communicated as a "pillar of human freedom and prosperity" - is likely to be the largest ever mass demonstration by the scientific community.

"We are expecting over 200 people to march with us on the 22nd".
