No flashing lights for VIPs in India

No More Red Beacons Atop Cars Including The Prime Minister — Effective May 1

Seeking to end the VIP culture, the Union Cabinet on Wednesday decided that beacon lights will be removed from all vehicles, except emergency vehicles, like ambulances and fire brigade.

Immediately after the cabinet meeting Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari got the red beacon atop is vehicle removed and appealed to his colleagues to follow suit.

Now, the privilege is limited only to emergency services, said Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday.

"Only defined emergency services will be allowed to use blue beacons with flasher", Jaitley said.

Central and state ministers, officials related to these ministries and other VVIPs will not be allowed to use red beacons on their vehicles.

Some state governments have voluntarily cracked down on the use of red beacon lights but the latest is the first credible step taken by the federal government.

Jaitley added that amendments will be made soon in the Central Motor Vehicles Rules to give effect to the decision.

The Government has taken the decision with a view to strengthening "healthy democratic values" in the country.

Reid back but Carroll out as West Ham prepare for Everton visit
Everton will also be looking for a late surge up the table but will be doing so from a much better position. The Belgian has scored in each of his last NINE games against the Hammers.

Speaking to reporters, minister Mathew said, "There's no particular use of keeping the lights on for another few days anyway".

Palaniswami himself personally removed the beacon light from his auto at the State Secretariat.

"I have not been using the red light since the beginning but I never publicise it".

PM Modi tweeted in regard to this decision.

This VIP culture should go and even ministers should feel like commoners sometimes.

Three judges had removed the beacons on Thursday itself following the Centre's decision to do away with VIP culture.

The top court called beacons atop cars of ministers and bureaucrats "ridiculous and synonymous with power", and said these should be removed immediately.

The opposition Congress too welcomed the government's decision, but termed as "laughable" the Bharatiya Janata party's attempt to blow the trumpet of morality over it. The court order said only constitutional authorities would be allowed to use the red beacon.
