'Fate of the Furious' Stays on Top; 'Unforgettable,' 'The Promise' Bomb

Expect the movie to top the box office again next weekend before Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" hits theatres May 5 (and could possibly break all the records "Fate of the Furious" just set).

Studio estimates Sunday say the eighth installment in the "Fast and the Furious" franchise earned $38.7 million over the weekend. A bankable, diverse cast including Dwayne Johnson, Vin Diesel and Charlize Theron is leading the film, directed by F. Gary Gray, to a two-frame global total of $744.8 million and worldwide sum of $908.4 million. In 2015, Furious 7 earned $353 million in North America and $1.163 billion internationally, for a worldwide total of $1.516 billion.

Cracking the box office top five this week is Born In China, which debuts in fourth place with an estimated $5.1 million following its recent North American release. The Zach Braff-directed update of the 1979 heist comedy ends this weekend with an estimated domestic total of $31.8 million.

Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" landed in third place again with an estimated 9.97 million US dollars. In China, it took in an impressive $192.1 million alone.

It is the No. 1 film in the world for the second week in a row. There's good news here - the film only cost $12 million to make - but there's no question that's a REALLY bad opener for a film with higher expectations and some star power (Rosario Dawson and Geoff Stults in addition to Heigl). Warner Bros.' "Unforgettable" seems to have slipped audiences' minds, earning $4.8 million in its first weekend from 2,417 theaters.

Both major releases in the last weekend of May will rely on star power. While Open Road's "The Promise" did a little better critically with an A- on CinemaScore and a 45 percent RT rating, it only made $4 million from 2,251 screens against a reported $90 million budget.

Directly addressing the mass killings of Armenians by the Ottoman Empire starting in 1915, the film starring Oscar Isaac and Christian Bale from "Hotel Rwanda" director Terry George didn't generate enough buzz among theater patrons - even with the endorsement of socialite Kim Kardashian West.

Two more minor films also opened in theaters this weekend, too: Phoenix Forgotten ($2 million opener from 1,592 theaters), and Free Fire ($1 million from 1,070 theaters).
