'Be more like Trump': Jean-Marie Le Pen criticises daughter's presidential campaign

Speaking from the Elysee presidential palace, Hollande said that Le Pen's platform of pulling out of the euro would devastate the country's economy and threaten French liberty.

A large part of the French don't want Le Pen, and her xenophobic policy, to reach power, but many are also reluctant to vote for Macron and back his pro-Europe, pro-business policies.

This included expelling her father from the party in August 2015 after he made controversial comments about the Holocaust - describing it as a "detail of history" - and defended Philippe Pétain, the leader of France's Nazi collaborationist Vichy regime in the 1940s.

Le Pen finished second in the first round of voting Sunday and she will now face centrist Emmanuel Macron in a run-off election.

A one-on-one against an ex-banker backed by politicians of all stripes wanting to form a dam against the FN gives Le Pen the flawless opportunity to boost her anti-establishment appeal, even if pollsters say that is not enough for her to win.

The final days of the presidential campaign were upended by an attack claimed by the Islamic State group that killed a police officer on Paris's Champs-Elysees, feeding into one of Le Pen's central themes.

However, he is fiercely opposed to her anti-immigrant stance and to her focus on radical Islam as one of the roots of France's troubles.

"The left-right divide is something of the past and the new divide is between the globalists and the patriots", Gaetan Dussausaye, the head of the FN Youths and a member of Le Pen's campaign committee, told Reuters. It was not clear what effect the attack had on the vote Sunday.

Even if Le Pen loses, she is not leaving the French political scene anytime soon. Since then, she has been working to softening the party's image by targeting widespread support of young public and workers.

"It is really impressive, because at 38 years of age, to move away from a party and to create his own movement and to be successful", Wenger said, "I did not think he would have a chance".

"There was a Jean-Marie Le Pen era". Marine Le Pen, National Front political party candidate for French 2017 presidential election, poses for a selfie with employees as she visits the Rungis worldwide food market, near Paris, France, during her cam.

Second, the tension between globalism and nationalism that the European Union embodies and that has been percolating at least since 2000 in France and beyond is finally out in the open. Her slogan is "In the Name of the People" and she promises to "Put France in Order".

The Socialists and rightwing Republicans party have duly called for voters to elect Macron, but Communist-backed Jean-Luc Melenchon, who won 19.58 percent of the vote on Sunday, gave no guidance. Many pollsters had placed him second to Le Pen in the opening round; however Macron eventually garnered more votes than Le Pen.

The 2012 defeat only reinforced her desire to win.

Unlike Macron, who was relatively unknown and not experienced in government, she has served in the European Parliament. She is a frequent contributor to Bloomberg and European Union press and media on European Union financial and political issues. "She inherited her father's party and we will undoubtedly have Le Pens running for the next 20 years, because after we had the father, we have the daughter and we will doubtless have the niece", he said, referring to Marion Marechal-Le Pen.

The French media relished recounting the divorce of her parents in her teen years.

But other analysts said the Le Pen and Wilders results were disappointments for the far right and that populism may have reached its peak with the victory for Brexit in the United Kingdom last June.

"They can be in agreement with us", said Steeve Briois, the mayor of Le Pen's northern bastion of Henin-Beaumont, adding that those far-left voters sought choices "outside the system".
