Dead, 3 Injured in UT Austin Stabbing Attack

Shortly before two in the afternoon on Monday, a stabbing incident on the University of Texas at Austin campus ended with one dead, three people injured, and a suspect in custody.

David Carter, the school's police chief stated that the man calmly attacked the four students on the campus plaza. Within two hours of the attack, UT officials canceled all classes and all remaining events for the day, turning the crowded campus into a relative ghost town.

Officers have one person in custody, police said.

The student killed Monday was identified Harrison Brown, a freshman who hoped to have a career in music, said university president Gregory L. Fenves.

She went into her class, which happened to be next to the Gregory gym building, where the stabbing incident occurred, but she said she found it hard to focus on her work.

Police say they received a call around 1:49 p.m. regarding an individual attacking someone outside the gym. The attack had about 25 witnesses, and the investigation is still ongoing, Carter said.

One of three people injured in a stabbing attack on the University of Texas campus in Austin on Monday is treated by first-responders. "He was always nice, had plenty of friends".

"That's a really busy area of campus where lots of food trucks come to sell food to students during lunch".

One of the victims died at the scene, according to UT Austin police. "I have been briefed by the Department of Public Safety on both incidents, and have also talked to University o Texas at Austin President Greg Fenves".

Some of White's former classmates at Killeen High School, near the gates of the Fort Hood Army post, had similar recollections of him.

"He grabbed this guy by the shoulder, who was facing away from him, and stabbed him in the back", she said. White graduated from high school in the Central Texas city of Killeen in 2014. He said the alarm may have been activated if, for example, police didn't know where the suspect was.

"His family and our community will never be able to hear Harrison play and sing again and, for this, our hearts are breaking and we are deeply deeply saddened", Fenves said.

Bonilla who was off-campus during the stabbing said campus police told students via email that the suspect had been detained, and were advised to stay away while investigation of the crime scene continues.

White was an active member of a student group of African American health professionals.

"There was no ongoing threat".

According to an arrest affidavit, police arrested White on April 4 on a charge of driving while intoxicated after he was involved in a wreck on campus.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott tweeted he was "praying for all those affected by this heinous attack" and offered "all available state resources" to the university.
