Syria blames Israel for explosions near Damascus airport

A senior Syrian official threatened a military response to an alleged Israeli strike on a Hezbollah-operated weapons hub near the Damascus airport on Thursday. "Naturally, I don't want to elaborate on this".

Israel has not confirmed or denied the reported Damascus attack.

However, Channel1iba's Amichai Stein reported multiple military personnel were killed in the strike.

Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman declared to Israeli media "The next time the Syrians use their air defense systems against our planes we will destroy them without the slightest hesitation".

Russia, which has deployed its forces to back up the Syrian regime, has a hotline set up to avoid clashes with Israeli jets in the skies over the war-torn country.

"When we receive intelligence that points to the intention to transfer advanced weapons to Hezbollah, we will act".

The Israeli army said the rockets were not among Syria's most advanced.

The Lebanese militant group's Al-Manar television said the raid hit a warehouse and fuel tanks, without specifying whether they were its own or belonged to the Syrian army or another of its allies. It went to war with Hezbollah in 2006 and the group has grown considerably more powerful since then.

"It's natural that we should have such systems", he said, quoted by Syria's official SANA agency on Thursday, the same day as Damascus accused Israel of firing several missiles at a military position near its worldwide airport.

But Intelligence Minister Yisrael Katz said it was consistent with Israel's policy to prevent arms transfers through to Hezbollah, while stopping short of confirming his country was behind the incident.

17 March 2017: The Israeli military says its aircraft attacked several targets in Syria and shot down a Syrian missile. The agency did not mention where the missiles hit.

The Russian Foreign Ministry summoned Israel's Ambassador to Moscow last month to protest about a different Israeli military strike in Syria, near the city of Palmyra.
