American detained in North Korea over 'hostile acts'

- Kim Hak Song was detained Saturday to be investigated for committing unspecified hostile acts, North Korea has said.

The college is an unlikely fit in a country that has been condemned by the U.S. State Department for cracking down on freedom of religion.

"When a USA citizen is reported to be detained in North Korea, we work with the Swedish embassy in Pyongyang", the official said in an emailed statement.

Two weeks earlier, North Korea detained another USA citizen, Kim Sang-dok or Tony Kim, as he waited to board a flight at Pyongyang airport.

Is war with North Korea possible? A third USA citizen, Kim Sang Dok, was detained in late April for hostile acts, according to KCNA. The allegation followed a near unanimous vote in the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday to toughen sanctions on North Korea and other countries that help its nuclear and missile programs, including China.

A foreign-funded university in North Korea confirmed Monday the arrest of a United States citizen - the second linked to the school held in two weeks amid tensions on the peninsula. In late April, another American was arrested at Pyongyang International Airport on similar charges. "For example, North Korea freed three US citizens during visits by former Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter in 2009 and 2010, respectively". He told CNN he was president of a trade and hotel services company in Rason, North Korea.

Sidney Crosby Injured by Matt Niskanen Cross-Check
Before Monday's game, he was named one of three finalists to the Hart Trophy, which is given to the NHL's most valuable player. However, the chances of the Penguins winning two more rounds without Crosby, Kris Letang and Matt Murray are not great.

And Kim Dong Chul, the president of a company involved in global trade and hotel services, was arrested in 2015 and is serving 10 years on espionage charges.

Warmbier was detained in January 2016 and sentenced to 15 years hard labour for attempting to steal a propaganda banner.

Some foreigners have said after their release that their declarations of guilt had been coerced while in North Korean custody.

It's a "fair assumption" that North Korea could be detaining USA citizens as a diplomatic bargaining chip, Joseph DeTrani, who served as the State Department's special envoy for negotiations with North Korea, told NPR last week.

The arrest of two Americans in such a short time comes as Pyongyang exchanges hostile rhetoric with the USA over its banned missile and nuclear weapons programmes. U.S. President Donald Trump has further spiked animosity by saying he isn't ruling out military action against the North, although Trump has also said he would be willing to talk with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un under the right circumstances.
