Nigeria's leader leaves for London health checks after meeting freed girls

Some of the 82 Nigerian schoolgirls board a helicopter after their release according to the International Committee of the Red Cross

Saturday's release is the largest since Boko Haram seized 276 Chibok girls in a mass abduction three years ago. Almost 300 schoolgirls from Chibok were abducted by Boko Haram in 2014, which brought the Islamist organisation associated with the Islamic State (ISIS) to the global fore.

The newly freed schoolgirls should be quickly released to their families and not be subjected to lengthy government detention, Amnesty International's Nigeria office said, adding that they don't deserve to be put through a "publicity stunt" and deserve privacy.

President Muhammadu Buhari has described the rescue of 82 Chibok schoolgirls as a pleasant 2nd anniversary gift to Nigerians.

The Bring Back Our Girls campaign said Sunday it was happy that Nigeria's government had committed to rescuing the 113 remaining schoolgirls.

Special adviser to the President, Femi Adesina, said that the released schoolgirls arrived at the Abuja airport Sunday and were met by Chief of Staff Alhaji Abba Kyari, according to Associated Press reports.

113 girls are now unaccounted for.

"The federal government will like to commend the security agencies, the Red Cross, local authorities, local and foreign NGOs and all those who contributed in one way or another to secure the release of our Chibok Girls".

Others stayed at their homes in north-eastern Nigeria, waiting to see if their daughters were released after the mass abduction from a Chibok boarding school in 2014.

Chinese export, import growth slow in April as rebound cools
The value of shipments overseas had been forecast to grow 10.0% according to economists polled by The Wall Street Journal. Foreign trade is expected to face a better environment in 2017 compared with the past two years, it said.

The statement from the office of President Muhammadu Buhari was the first confirmation that his government had made a swap for the girls.

The International Committee of the Red Cross says it acted as a neutral intermediary and transported the 82 freed Chibok schoolgirls into the hands of Nigeria's government.

Some relatives did not live to see their daughters released.

As news of the latest release broke, long-suffering family members said they are eagerly awaiting a list of names and their "hopes and expectations are high".

Military and civilian militia sources in the town of Banki, on the border with Cameroon, said the girls had left for Borno state capital Maiduguri on board six military helicopters.

But the groundswell eventually waned and the Associated Press reports, numerous girls were forced into marriages with their captors and others were feared to have been forced into suicide bombing missions.

Boko Haram remains active in that area. "Their life in captivity has been one that depicts suffering, it depicts the fact that they have been starved, abused, and as we have seen before some of those girls have come back with children, and some of them have also come back with news of how they have been sexually abused".

"The Boko haram leaders said as the negotiation continue, no girl will be forced to renounce "her husband" the same way they were not compelled to renounce their faith in the last three years", he said.
