Hundreds of Sudanese protest in solidarity with Palestinian prisoners

A hunger strike by more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners over their treatment in Israeli jails has turned into a heated dispute over whether the leader of the protest secretly broke the fast, and whether Israel tempted him to do so.

The protesters handed a memorandum to the UN Representative in Sudan, demanding the worldwide organization to intervene to improve the conditions of the Palestinian prisoners and force Israel to respect the global humanitarian law.

The Israeli government on Monday released a video purporting to show the leader of the Palestinian prisoners" hunger strike sneaking food in his cell - but the video does not have a verified time stamp, does not show the face of the prisoner in the cell, and has been discounted by hunger strikers as "pure propaganda'.

Israeli officials have dismissed the strike as a bid by Barghouti to burnish his credentials in an internal Palestinian power struggle.

For Israelis, he is a murderer and a terrorist who is serving five life sentences for his role in suicide bombings and attacks against Israelis that killed five people during the Second Intifada, or uprising, that began in 2000.

Israeli officials released a video which they claim shows Barghouthi eating food - but critics and analysts say the video is not of Barghouthi at all.

"This hunger strike was never about the conditions of the convicted terrorists, which meet worldwide standards", Israeli Minister of Public Security Gilad Erdan said. "It was completely inappropriate and does not reflect the values of our brand", Pizza Hut stated on the offical page Tuesday night.

Palestinians called for a boycott of Pizza Hut on Tuesday after the company's franchise in Israel was accused of mocking hunger-striking prisoners.

The post, which Pizza Hut stated came from an agency, has since been removed.

The post was taken down from their Hebrew Facebook page.

"Pizza Hut is ridiculing the prisoners' strike", activist Alaa Abu Diab wrote on Facebook, using the hashtag #boycott_pizzahut.

Palestinians had started to call for boycotts of Pizza Hut before several activists from other Arab countries joined the boycott calls.

The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which calls for boycotting Israel until it ends the occupation of Palestinian territories, said it supported calls to snub Pizza Hut.

The caption that was written in Hebrew said, "Barghouti, if you are no longer on a hunger strike, why not eat pizza instead?".
