Civilians, Peacekeepers Killed in vehicle

Kuwait- Moroccan UN peacekeeper killed in armed attack

Christian militias killed as many as 30 civilians over the weekend in escalating violence on the Central African Republic border with Congo.

The militants have also been targetting United Nations base in the area, prompting the deployment of extra troops to the remote town in anticipation of further attacks.

The U.N. Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic, or MINUSCA, says it is sending reinforcements to Bangassou where it says displaced civilians are seeking refuge in a mosque, a Catholic church and a Doctors Without Borders hospital.

"The situation is extremely deplorable and we are doing everything to rapidly retake control of Bangassou", MINUSCA chief Parfait Onanga-Anyanga told the media in an interview.

Fighting in the eastern region of Central African Republic has mounted in recent months. The country has been plagued by inter-religious violence since 2013.

The Voice of America (VOA) reported that local Red Cross President Pastor Antoine Mbao Bogo said gunfire continued to ring out from the town on Sunday, blocking attempts by his organisation and others to reach the wounded and recover the dead.

UNSC to hold urgent consultations on NKorea missile test
Security Council will be holding private consultations Tuesday afternoon regarding North Korea's recent missile testing. Six-party talks involving the North, the U.S., South Korea, Russia, China and Japan broke down in 2009.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed "outrage" and called on the authorities "to investigate the attacks in order to swiftly bring those responsible to justice".

Despite heavy fire against MINUSCA's field office, peacekeepers attempted to respond to the attack in Tokoyo to protect civilians. In January 2017, two Moroccan members of FAR squad of the MINUSCA were killed in an armed attack near the town of Bria on the northeast of the capital Bangui.

This is not the first time peacekeepers have been targeted in the Central African Republic.

More than 400,000 people in the former French colony are displaced internally and 2.2 million, or almost half the population, are reliant on aid.

The overnight assault on the camp in the southeastern city of Bangassou, which is near the Democratic Republic of Congo, was staged by the mainly Christian anti-Balaka group, the United Nations mission in the country (MINUSCA) said.
