Haitians facing deportation get USA extension

Black Lives Matter Co-Founder Pushing Feds to Let 50000 Haitians Remain in the Country

The Department of Homeland Security Monday announced a six month extension of humanitarian protections for about 55,000 Haitians living in the United States with working permits.

Temporary Protected Status was first granted by the Obama administration to Haiti in 2010 following a devastating natural disaster that killed an estimated 220,000 and displacing 1.5 million. He asked Haitian nationals to begin preparing for their departure by obtaining travel documents or applying for immigration benefits to which they are entitled.

The extension will allow them to remain in the USA until January 2018.

The evening's show was the first in a series of appearances Jean had scheduled this weekend in Miami, where the large Haitian-American community anxiously waits for the Trump Administration to decide whether to renew immigration benefits granted to Haitians after a 2010 quake struck their Caribbean homeland.

But in his statement, Kelly also signaled his department may end the temporary status for Haitians when the six-month extension ends in January, citing "progress" Haiti has made since the quake, including the movement out of temporary displacement camps by 96 percent of the residents.

"I continue to believe, and will continue to champion, that a full TPS renewal of 18 months is in the best interest of both Haiti and the United States", Hastings said in a statement from his office. The designation has been renewed several times.

Tometi told the crowd that there are almost one million black immigrants in New York City, who make up almost 30 percent of its black population.

The Trump administration has until tomorrow to determine whether roughly 50,000 Haitians in the USA will continue to benefit from the Temporary Protected Status program. The island-nation was still plagued by a cholera epidemic, inadequate medical care, an unstable economy, a lack of enough food and housing and rampant security threats. As a result of these conditions, the Institute for Justice & Democracy in Haiti notes that the country is incapable of properly receiving and resettling detainees at this time.

The Post reported that the Trump administration, earlier this month, sent waves of fear through Haitian communities after the Associated Press reported that his administration was looking into how many Haitians on TPS have been convicted of criminal activity, as well as the number using public assistance.

A report prepared by the acting director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, James McCament, in April recommended the secretary terminate the program, but delay the effective date until January to allow "a period of orderly transition". TPS grants temporary permission to live, study and work legally in the U.S.to immigrants whose homelands are in crisis.

Critics of the extension say TPS is meant to be temporary, as the program's name denotes.

Wilson says more needs to be done.

Immigrant rights activists responded quickly and pointed out that the leaked emails reflect an alarming connection made by the government between crime and Black immigrants.

She noted that as a black immigrant that suffered with homelessness and mental health issues, he "experienced constant violence in the forms of poverty, xenophobia, criminalization of homelessness and mental health issues in addition to anti-black racism at the systemic level".

Trump reached out to Haitian immigrants past year on the campaign trail.

"I really want to be your greatest champion", Trump told them then. "And I will be your champion, whether you vote for me or not".

U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Florida) agreed that Haiti is in no condition to receive the large amount of citizens back in the country.
