Rebel Wilson tells court Australian articles hurt her career

Rebel Wilson leaving court on 19 May

As the defamation case brought by the Bridesmaids actor began in Melbourne on Monday, the supreme court of Victoria heard that Wilson was a rags-to-riches case torn down by a tabloid publisher who simply wanted to sell magazines.

Hollywood star Rebel Wilson on Monday (May 22) accused an Australian publisher of portraying her as a serial liar in a series of articles that she said cost her lucrative movie roles.

Wilson said that in her hallucination she rapped her acceptance speech at the Academy Awards, and upon waking realised she had to pursue the vision.

Rebel Wilson walks from the Supreme Court after day one of her defamation trial against Bauer Media.

The actress said she was nicknamed Rebel and in 2002 made a decision to legally change her name to Rebel Elizabeth Melanie Wilson, taking her mother's maiden name after her parents separated.

"These articles were a malicious, deliberate take-down of me".

"They refused to let the facts get in the way of a good story", he said, The Age newspaper reported.

Wilson says in the past two years since the articles were published, she has only had two roles - one for the Absolutely Fabulous, which she did as a favour, and a stage role in London.

According to courtroom reports, Wilson is saying that she was sacked from at least two movies and has been unable to find work since Bauer's campaign of eight articles was published back in 2015.

Without Planned Parenthood, Women Who Need Affordable Contraception Would Be Lost
Planned Parenthood says more than 14,600 people visited the four closing clinics in the past three years. Now, Iowa will only have five Planned Parenthood clinics that give women access to the procedure.

Three days before publishing the article at the centre of the trial, Woman's Day editor-in-chief Fiona Connolly voiced concerns about it.

She is expected to testify at a later date.

Bauer Media denies the articles were defamatory.

The court also heard that Ms Wilson had lost acting opportunities because of the articles.

Wilson returned to Australia and chose to become an actress after finishing an arts-law degree at the University of New South Wales.

The jury was shown an entire episode of the ABC's Julia Zemiro's Home Delivery, featuring Wilson.

She told the court Wilson had told Overington her auntie had been married to Walt Disney, giving her open access to Disneyland as a child.

Wilson told the jury she was on powerful drugs and had a premonition while in hospital.

"To stand up there like that, " she said.
