USA to test missile defense after North Korea warns of 'gift'

South Korea: Warplanes Conduct Drill With U.S. Bombers

Under the supervision of Kim Jong Un, North Korea fired a short-range ballistic missile off its east coast Monday morning.

Shotaro Yachi, head of the secretariat of the Japanese government's National Security Council, on Monday called on China to play a bigger role in addressing North Korea's missile launches, Japan's Jiji Press reported.

Such launches, and two nuclear tests since January 2016, have been conducted in defiance of United Nations resolutions and the threat of more sanctions. South Korea's Yonhap news agency, without citing a source, said the projectile is believed to be a ballistic missile, but the South Korean military said it was still analyzing what exactly the North launched.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told reporters that "North Korea's provocation by ignoring repeated warnings from global society is absolutely unacceptable".

The missile test triggered swift condemnation from US President Donald Trump who said it showed "disrespect" for neighboring China, the North's sole major ally, which has sought to dampen tensions over Pyongyang's weapons program. Last Tuesday in a Senate hearing, Defense Intelligence Agency Director Lt. Gen. Vincent Stewart said that North Korea is likely to succeed in gaining nuclear missile capability.

This launch came just after G7 leaders met this weekend in Italy, where they urged North Korea to "abandon all its ballistic and nuclear missile programmes in a complete, verifiable and irreversible manner".

Riki Ellison, the founder of the Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance based near Washington which advocates for the development and deployment of missile defense systems to defend the United States, described the test as "vital".

North Korea has dubbed its last three tests successes.

"That the North repeated such provocations after the inauguration of our new leadership.is a direct challenge to our demand for peace and denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula", the foreign ministry said.

He said, "Bottom line is it would be a catastrophic war if this turns into a combat if we're not able to resolve this situation through diplomatic means".
