Apple leaks, insider product news and Siri

Apple says its Safari browser will try to guard your privacy by identifying and blocking data files that track you as you move from website to website. "It will reinvent home audio", boasted Apple CEO Tim Cook. Since the conference is focused on developers - the people who make your favorite apps - Apple also showed what software updates it has in store for later this year.

Positioned as a competitor to the Amazon Echo, the HomePod prioritizes music usage.

Phil Schiller, Apple's SVP of worldwide marketing, said on stage that the product has been in the works for "years".

Apple has unveiled a new $349 HomePod home wireless speaker as the tech giant aims to take on Amazon and Google in smart speaker market.

Amazon introduced the Echo speaker, featuring its Alexa assistant, in 2015.

Apple will roll out the free update sometime this fall.

The browser's new "intelligent tracking prevention", meanwhile, will use machine learning to identify and block digital-ad trackers in order to keep advertisers from following and profiling users.

Economy Watch: Job Growth Tepid in May
The decline in that measure is an encouraging sign that jobless people who had given up hope of working are now being hired. Job gains in March were revised down to 50,000 from 79,000 while April's figures were also lowered to 174,000 from 211,000.

The company is casting Siri as a music connoisseur that will learn and cater to the tastes of the HomePod's owners, as well as answer questions about the songs as they are played.

The money can be stored on a virtual card and used with Apple Pay, which Apple expects will be accepted in 50 percent of USA retailers by the end of the year.

Recode had first reported that Amazon and Apple were nearing an agreement to bring Amazon's app to Apple TV, and BuzzFeed later confirmed the news. It's the first time in 15 years that Apple has held its conference in San Jose, the heart of Silicon Valley.

A set of iOS 11 features including enabling smartphone cameras to read QR codes are aimed at the China market, where Apple would like to bolster iPhone sales.

Still, the Apple Watch hasn't been a smash hit, fueling worries that the company's ability to transfix customers had waned after the 2011 death of co-founder Steve Jobs. Siri will also be able to create a shared Up Next queue with everyone in the home. The cylindrical speaker will be around 7 inches tall and features specifications including a seven-tweeter array for directional audio and a 4-inch upward facing woofer for low-end definition. Apple's HomePod will rely on its own HomeKit for support while Google Home has various partners for smart home hardware that include Samsung, Nest and Philips.

"Though Apple appears to be playing catch up with Amazon and Google, the primary casualty here may be Sonos". This year, however, Apple watchers believe there could be a number of product announcements - perhaps including a new product line, with a new smart speaker. For Apple, having one would further broaden the role that its software, services and gadgets play in people's lives.
