Fires and worst storm in decades kill nine people in South Africa

A raging fire along the Garden Route

Late Tuesday South Africa's weather service had forecast hail, snowfall and gale-force winds exceeding 90 kilometers an hour in parts of the Western Cape Province.

Plettenberg Bay residents have started to evacuate as the devastating fire that started burning in the Kranshoek area on Wednesday has spread to the outskirts of the coastal holiday town, reports the Knysna-Plett Herald.

At least eight people have been killed and thousands displaced in the South African city of Cape Town after the worst storm in three decades storm unleashed heavy rains and high winds.

In a televised media briefing, Western Cape local government official said the body of another person was found Thursday, bringing the total of those killed to nine.

Via twitter, many people have been volunteering their homes and cars for those leaving the area of the blaze.

The storm had largely abated by Thursday morning, a damage assessment got under way and schools that were closed on Wednesday reopened.

He added that officials were "cautiously optimistic that no further evacuations" would be needed in the area. The service provider company indicated it is aware that some of its customers in Cape Town and Eastern Cape are experiencing intermittent service disruptions due to power lines that were damaged by strong winds yesterday.

Zuma said natural disasters such as the one that affected the Western Cape always strike the poor more than anyone.

While Cape Town badly needs rain following the worst drought on record, the downpour will only marginally alleviate water shortages, city authorities said.
