Electricity cut at Navalny's offices in Moscow

The demonstration is the second mass action since March 26 called by Navalny, who has announced his intention to run for president next year and has drawn a new generation to the streets through a relentless online campaign.

Navalny himself was arrested Monday afternoon outside his home in Moscow as he headed for an unsanctioned protest rally. She also posted a picture showing police officers at the scene.

There is a risk of violence as Mr Navalny's supporters descend on Moscow city centre for an unauthorised protest. But Monday's protests could demonstrate that it has significant support throughout the vast country.

Local media said roughly 3,000 people protested in the Siberian city of Novosibirsk.

Smaller anti-corruption rallies were scheduled to take place in 212 cities across Russian Federation.

"They are saying that to make people afraid so they don't go", Ruslan Shaveddinov, a spokesman for Navalny's team, said.

Authorities arrested Navalny and kept him detained for two weeks.

The military on Saturday said that this is the biggest single-day loss for the government forces in a battle which has been ongoing for almost three weeks.

For now, polls suggest Navalny, who was jailed for 15 days for disobeying a policeman at the last protest, has scant chance of unseating Putin, who enjoys high ratings.

Authorities "are forbidding any contractors from getting us a stage and sound", he wrote on his blog Sunday.

Around 1,000 protesters started to move from the square towards the Kremlin, but their path was blocked by police barriers put in place as part of a festival of historical costumes on Tverskaya Street, Moscow's central thoroughfare.

The General Prosecutor's Office warned that a protest there would be illegal and police would be forced to take "all necessary measures" to prevent disorder. It is a national holiday, and a whole series of official events are already planned on Tverskaya Street to mark Russia Day - including some military re-enactments.

Kira Yarmysh tweeted the information shortly after Navalny was reportedly arrested outside his Moscow home while on his way to an unsanctioned protest demonstration. "He asked me to tell you that the plans (for the protest) are unchanged".

President Vladimir Putin vowed to punish people who broke the law after an estimated 60,000 people protested in March at anti-corruption rallies organized by Navalny that were mostly unsanctioned in 80 cities across Russian Federation, the biggest unrest in five years.

Navalny's Fund for Fighting Corruption had been providing updates on protests throughout the country Monday.
