Oregon Adds A New Gender Option To Its Driver's Licenses: X

Male, female or X? Oregon adds third option to driver's licenses

Earlier this month, Gov. Kate Brown signed a bill making it easier for transgender residents to shield changes they make to their birth certificates, with the aim of mitigating potential discrimination from employers or landlords, making or the second state (after California) to pass such a law.

OR has further upped its progressive cred by becoming the first state in the nation to approve a third gender marker on driver's licenses and other identity documents.

Gender non-binary residents will soon be able to select "X" for non-specified gender when they apply for their identification cards. But Diane Goodwin with Basic Rights Oregon said the change is necessary to move the issue forward.

"Secondly, the bill advances a falsehood: that being male or female, or no gender at all is a choice each person must make, not a fact to celebrate and accept. Laws like this will simply erase any meaningful gender definitions, if being male or female is completely divorced from biological facts". Drivers can now choose if they're male, female, or x.

For those who don't know, a non-binary gender means an individual does not identify with either the "male" or "female" label. "The state of OR sees me for who I am".

Citizens of Australia and New Zealand already have the option to choose "X" on their passports, and in India passport applicants can pick Male, Female or Eunuch. Recently, a bill passed through the California House Senate, which would similarly allow for a third gender-neutral option. "This was always the right thing to do all along", he added. "Our lives are so gendered, which is why it's important that driver licenses and other forms of IDs recognize people who are non-binary", Haque said in a statement.

DMV spokesperson David House told the Guardian, "There was very little opposition" to the change. "Time was required to study state laws, update computer systems, work with business partners such as law enforcement and courts, and change administrative rules".

"I've trembled with the fear of failure and cried tears until I had no more tears to cry, because of the magnitude of what's been at stake - and now won", Shupe told NBC News after the commission's vote.

Gender identity has become a major flashpoint across the USA in places like North Carolina, which passed a bill forcing students to use toilets according to the sex listed on their birth certificates.
