Trump appears to confirm he's under investigation

President Trump

President Donald Trump acknowledged on Friday that he is personally under investigation as part of a widening probe into alleged Russian meddling in last year's USA presidential race and possible collusion by his campaign, an inquiry that has cast a shadow over his five months in office.

It is unclear to whom Trump is referring: Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Sessions wrote memos supportive of ousted FBI Director James Comey's firing. Dianne Feinstein of California, the ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, said she was "growing increasingly concerned" that Trump might attempt to fire both Mueller and Rosenstein.

The special prosecutor investigating Russia's alleged meddling in the USA presidential elections has expanded the probe to include Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of President Donald Trump, reported the Washington Post.

Kushner, the adviser and son-in-law of President Donald Trump, met separately with the Russian ambassador to the United States and a Russian businessman in December - interactions that were already under scrutiny as part of the Federal Bureau of Investigation probe.

Rosenstein, who appointed Mueller special counsel in the Russian Federation investigation last month, testified to lawmakers Tuesday that he has seen no evidence of good cause to fire Mueller and that he is confident that Mueller will have "the full independence he needs" to investigate thoroughly.

It wasn't clear whether the president was basing his tweet on direct knowledge that he is under investigation, or on reports this week that special counsel Robert Mueller is examining whether the president obstructed justice by firing Comey last month amid the ongoing Russian Federation investigation. After the statement, the Post updated the Kushner article so that its first sourcing reference was to "U.S. officials".

On Thursday, Trump blasted news reports that he is under criminal investigation as a "witch-hunt" against him led by some "very bad" people. Trump himself took aim Friday at the senior Justice Department official responsible for appointing Mueller, accusing him on Twitter of leading a "Witch Hunt". US President Donald Trump announced yesterday he is under investigation in connection with a probe into alleged Russian election meddling that is gnawing away at his administration - and gathering pace.

Practice king Federer ready for competitive return
Federer had not played since April 2, when he beat reigning French Open champion Rafael Nadal to win the Miami Open . The former world No. 1 is now eager to get back to competition this year after a 10-week layoff.

A source on Trump's legal team attempted to clarify the missive, claiming he was reacting to media reports about the investigation rather than offering public confirmation.

The White House has denied any collusion, and Trump has repeatedly complained about the probe, saying Democrats can not accept his election win. But Rosenstein, too, may ultimately have to hand off oversight given his role in Trump's decision to fire Comey.

A spokesman for the Justice Department did not respond to an email request for clarification and comment Friday morning. Trump cited the memo in firing Comey.

In another development, members of Trump's transition team that served him after he was elected in November until he took office in January have been ordered to preserve materials related to the Russian Federation matter, the New York Times reported. The bottom line is that the investigation must proceed; it must proceed under the leadership of Robert Mueller and it must proceed without any interference or obstruction from Trump or his team. Rosenstein also insisted Mueller's investigation would have the resources it needs.

Inside the White House, a sense of foreboding has taken hold on even the most junior staff and up to the Oval Office, as news emerged that Vice President Mike Pence has hired a high-powered outside counsel to represent him.

As Trump's No. 2 and as head of the transition team, Pence has increasingly found himself drawn into the widening Russian Federation investigation. He has already been subpoenaed by the House intelligence committee.

The Post reports the other members include: 'former national security adviser Michael Flynn, former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and Carter Page, who was listed as a foreign-policy adviser for the campaign'.
