United Arab Emirates calls for western monitoring of Qatar

Muslim scholar hails Turkish role in Qatari crisis

On Saturday, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash called on the Western countries to introduce a mechanism to monitor Qatar's alleged support of terrorism.

"It is clear that the actions of the blockading nations have little to do with addressing legitimate grievances and everything to do with attacking Qatar's image and reputation", he said.

"Qatar is not the one who supports terrorism, quite the opposite", he said last week.

"The Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion categorically denies that Saudi Arabia has severed ties with Malta; in fact, these ties remain as strong as ever". The measures also included closing Qatar's only land border, banning its planes from using their airspace and barring Qatari nationals from transiting through their airports.

"But what I said last week remains true, in that we have continued to be able to operate, even through that friction", Marine General Joseph Dunford told reporters in Washington.

He said that despite the row, the Gulf nations had pledged to allow the massive U.S. base in Qatar, where 10,000 American soldiers are based, to function normally.

US President Donald Trump's recent visit to Riyadh and efforts at bolstering US relations with Saudi Arab and Egypt to put a common front against Iran and radical Islamist groups has been seen by some analysts as contributing to the recent political developments in the Gulf.

It's oil- and gas-rich, and its leaders have managed to defy larger Arab neighbors in recent years in part by leveraging that wealth and ties with another neighbor, Iran, and the United States - 10,000 USA troops are based at Al Udeid Air Base outside Doha.

Erdogan told Portuguese television this week that he had approached the Gulf state's King Salman "with the same idea for Saudi" after work began on the base in Qatar in 2014.

In the next few days, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt will submit a list of demands to Qatar, which is likely to include the expulsion of radical individuals.

In a sign of support for the tiny Arab country, Turkey's parliament approved a legislation on Wednesday, allowing its troops to be deployed to a Turkish military base in Qatar.

CEO Saad al-Kaabi said that although there was a "force majeure" clause in the agreement on the Dolphin gas pipeline, which links Qatar's giant North Field with the UAE, Qatar would not stop supplies for other reasons.

"Sheikh Saif bin Ahmed al-Thani, Director of Qatar's Government Communications Office, said in a statement:"It is unfortunate that our neighbours have chosen to invest their time and resources in a baseless propaganda campaign".

According to a report released by the NHRC on Thursday, the rights of more than 13,000 citizens of the four GCC countries involved in the crisis have been directly violated by the blockade.
