BC Liberals expect defeat Thursday, but want to pass campaign finance law

UPDATE: Horgan, Weaver cry foul on speaker stance

Horgan and Weaver said the extensive preparations for a government likely to last only a week are tactics by Clark to cast doubt on the viability of the Green-NDP alliance.

Green party Leader Andrew Weaver is accusing the Liberals of trying to hold onto power seven weeks after the election that left them with a minority government. He called the two bills "an olive branch" to the other parties.

"It's a bit baffling that the Green party, which asked for exactly these changes, has made a decision to vote against even looking at it", said Wilkinson. But he insisted his main objective in seeking clarity is to help the 27 new MLAs understand the rules and precedent that govern the legislature during hard times. "I think the workability of a reconfigured parliament with an NDP-Green government, based on the numbers, is going to be challenging".

Bernier continued that the Greens and NDP would rather take down government, create instability and force another election.

NDP leader John Horgan and B.C. Green leader Andrew Weaver have said Premier Christy Clark's newly adopted positions on raising income assistance rates, banning bridge tolls and other recent reversals have strengthened their resolve to defeat the B.C. Liberals.

"It's not appropriate for us to be debating government business until such time as the confidence has been tested", he said, before suggesting he might amend a future NDP bill to include some of the Liberal ideas.

He said the Liberals had 16 years to reform campaign finance laws and failed to do so.

Five Camden tower blocks being evacuated over fire safety fears
It also reported that Whirlpool insisted its offer to fix all the affected machines was the most effective way to solve the problem.

NDP house leader Mike Farnworth says the Opposition will introduce a confidence motion as an amendment to the debate on Thursday's throne speech.

The NDP and Green Party agreed to vote against the Liberals in a confidence motion after none of the parties won a majority of seats in the May election.

If the Liberals fall, Lt. -Gov. Judith Guichon will allow the NDP, formally backed by the Green Party with a four-year supply and confidence agreement, to form the government. It does look a little screwy when the opposition parties defeat the very bills they plan to introduce once they assume the reins of power. "Only (the government) controls the timing of the confidence vote", he (Weaver) continued.

For sheer theatre it would be pretty hard to beat what has been going on politically in this province since the May 9th election. "When will she say and concede that 44 is a larger number than 43?" Let's have a vote.

As a concerned taxpayer, I am looking at how the B.C. Liberal government lost a Supreme Court challenge to their controversial unilateral changes to the BCTF.

And no more of those bad road tolls that the B.C. Liberals insisted all through the election campaign were vital to maintaining our AAA credit rating.

Christy Clark has set the bar high in promising less partisan, more collaborative, more compassionate government.
